FHP goes undercover to nab speeders

Rush-hour drivers on the Central Florida GreeneWay this morning were surprised when a construction driver pulled them over on the northbound lane.

The construction worker was actually a Florida Highway Patrol trooper dressed in blue jeans, T-shirt, orange traffic vest and hard hat.

"He was just one of the guys out there in the construction zone, except he had one additional piece of equipment," said FHP spokesman Lt. Chuck Williams. "He had a radar gun."

Although the idea of using a disguised law-enforcement officer has been used by other local agencies, it was the first time the state patrol has used it in Central Florida.

Williams said troopers posted on the northbound lane of the GreeneWay south of the University Road exit wrote 21 tickets before calling off the operation because of backed-up traffic on the southbound lane.

All the speeders were driving at 15 miles or more over the posted 55 mph construction zone limit, Williams said. Since fines in construction zones are doubled, drivers were ticketed with fines running from $270 to $520, he said.

A similar operation was being held in Volusia County as well.

Williams said drivers fail to understand how dangerous construction zones can be. He said there have been 106 crashes in the area monitored this morning.

More operations are planned.

"When people hear about this, it will plant a seed of doubt as to whether they're seeing a construction worker or a trooper," Williams said. "Paranoia can work for us."

That seems strange. If I saw some guy trying to pull me over dressed like that, I would think it was a freak and not a cop.

:alien:

I would sort of think thats some kind of entraptment. Well not exactly but it sways towards that idea. If its legal and it works hey why not.

He has a radio and calls the vehicle desc up to patrol FHP cars up ahead...

I see. That seems better. I would be really hesitant to pull over to some street dressed guy. I would probably go faster LOL!!!

I guess I should just go the speed limit, huh :D

Is that how we want pigs to start thinking?

Hope something falls from a crane and kills him.

Tell me what's wrong with that ? If it works I don't see any problem. Here not so far from Montreal (Laval) the provincial Police used different undercover cars (Camaro, Intrepid, Cavalier, Impala....) and car accidents in the area had a good 20% drop.

Because you have opened the door to any type of skirting of the boundries of law, for the bullshit purpose of "protecting the public". Do you really think that speeding tickets are given out to prevent traffic accidents? Have you ever been to traffic court? The city makes millions of dollars a year from this. Now they don't even care if you are present for a hearing, just send the money in.

The amount of effort the system uses to prevent a crime seems correlated to the amount of revenue it generates. Traffic violations, drug offenses, etc. far outweigh the efforts placed on rape and murder prevention.

I hate to tell you this, but that is done in many states. Where Troopers are dressed as civilians along the side of the road to catch speeders.

it is absolutely legal. So therE's no problem IMO. Also what is your solution ? No more speeding ticket ? No more speed limits ?
