Here it is. So I've been training the 5x5 for the last 6 months or so and I wanted to take a brake. I wanted to try running a 20 rep workout for 6-8 weeks. I can't seem to make myself do it. I feel gay, weak, stupid, and stupider. I really want to just through the 20 rep crap in the trash and keep running some sort of strength program. What does everyone else think??

i could insert a gay quote here, but i'll just say that you should try to be as well rounded as possible and change is good. why can't you do both?

I would say that you might want to try a more typical 20-rep squat approach, where you attack squats for 20-reppers and put the other stuff on maintenance. You don't hve to do everything for 20 reps. I have a journal of my 20-rep squat trial. If you'd like to see how I approached it I coudl post a link.

Cool. Post the link when you get a sec.

I like the template for the 5x5 a lot more than the 20-rep setup you were doing in your journal. If your choice is between those two, go with the former.

But as G5.0 mentioned, there are good 20-rep layouts out there, and as I mentioned in your journal, you could also combine high and low reps in a 5x5-style plan.

I think change is good.. I also think if you're not happy with what you're doing, to the point u're throwing up a poll, then its probably time to change to something else. What about trying a WSB or HST type program for variety? Whatever you do, don't try and stick to a program that is making you unenthusiastic about hitting the gym up.

I also agree, adopt a more basic 20rep squat routine and I have no idea how you could feel 'gay, weak, stupid and stupider' when you are about to puke after a set of squats??? To me that means hard work not gayness but that is just me...

Exercise setsxreps
BTN PP 3x12
Squat 1x20
Bench 3x8-12
Row/Clean/Sldl 3x8 or 3x5 if doing cleans
Deads 1-3x8-12
Pullups/dips or tris/bis couple sets to make you happy if you're that kind of guy.

Do good heavy weight in a progressive fashion on all the lifts but keep the squats as the main focus and push that up to well over 150% of body weight. You will not feel gay I assure you!
