Hey, I'm wondering if someone knows anyone working for any particular federal agancies and what type of college degree is necessary in order to help you land one of these jobs?

The reason why I'm asking this is because as you can tell, I'm interested in that field of work and will be enrolling in college next fall, but need some help with choosing a good major that would qualify me for a federal job. Thanks a lot and I appreciate all the responses.

Big Mike,

You didn't go to SHU did you?

I used to date a girl who's parent were in an organization. It is a very "know somebody" type of job. Good luck and start your public relations journey.

I have friends in the FBI and worked close with some people from the CIA.

The FBI require a four year degree OR fluency in a foriegn language. Right now, Arabic languages will get you a job real quick.

The FBI isnt specific about types of degrees, although it must apply to your intended field of interest with the FBI. There are many aspects of law enforcement at the FBI, so poke around their website and get a feel for what interests you.

The CIA is not specific either, and in fact they do not require a four year degree for non-field positions. Experience will land you a job, but sounds like you don't have much experience to put on a resume.

Just wondering, why didn't you just go to www.cia.gov and www.fbi.gov?

Im planning on applying for the FBI in about 3 years...I am finishing up my Bachelors in Criminal Justice in a few months.

If you want a pretty much guaretneed job...get an accounting degree...their white-collar crime division is huge and always looking for people skilled in that area.

Do you have any military or law enforcement experience.

Because they get a MILLION CJ's grads each year applying. And you need something to cull you from the fat, like actual experience.

Im 21 now...not planning on applying until I am 25. During that time I am going to do regular law enforcement.

I have been thinking about the marines once I graduate, but have not decided yet.

Don't go marines unless you want to walk away with no applicable skills in the real world. I'd suggest national guard, while in school and then taking the POST exam.

Going in with POST will look good and the guard time will help a lot too.

Thats interesting...I have never had anyone suggest that before...of course those who I have talked to all served in the army, marines, etc themselves. Food for thought I guess.

So fellas, if you wanted to get a job in the FBI, which of these majors would you go for in college: Molecular Biology, Accounting, or Criminal Justice? Thanks once again...

Marines have no traditional MOS. In the Army you can come away with real world job skills. In the marines you come away being able to act as a sandbag for the Army :)

Seriously though, marines won't give you any edge re: FBI. If anything, you'll appear to be just another "high speed, low drag" grunt looking to wax a couple cultists.

Going national guard will grant you an MOS that could be applied to your FBI work *and* it gives you other options should the FBI not work out for you.

Passing POST training gives you an edge for field agent status (yes the FBI has their own training, but POST gives you quite an edge on other candidates because of it's similarity and you've proven you can pass the bulk of FBI training).

i believe any 4 year degree can get you in

minor in foreign lang would prob be a HUGE plus

grades have to be kept pretty high

Foriegn language must be either native or "near native" spoken. But a minor in one will get you into the field sooner than not having one.

For the CIA grades are EXTREMELY important if you're coming in right out of college. It's the only thing you have done recently and they're the sole metrics used for judging your college work.

FBI will take any degree as will the CIA. Although the CIA doesn't require a degree for all jobs.

Right now I'm deciding between Accounting and Molecular Biology. I also speak fluent Polish since I came to U.S. when I was little and received U.S. citizenship a few years ago. My high school grades are pretty good also(3.7GPA) and I'll make sure to keep my grades high in college.

4 year degree

fbi will take a 4 yr degree in anything, so will the cia, they have many places you can work. foreign languages are good, experience in law enforcement is a plus,,,,,,

what are you lookin to do?

Good thread guys.

I also want to venture the same route as the almighty and big mike.

1. Major-Criminal Justice

2. Minor-Political Science(or should I change)

3. I speak greek fluently.

I want to be a special agent for the FBI.

Im looking into the national guard also.

What is POST?

PLease advise.

Questions about the national Guard:

1. How much do I get paid a month?

2. Will the guard interfere with my schooling?

3. WIll I be shipped off?

4. If a war occured, what are the chnaces of me seeing battle?

5. Is it a good idea?

For cia, Read there employment, I think you need a 4 year degree in International buisness, finance, realtions,Flutency in a non-romance language, Nuclear physics, biology and a few others. Then after you school to training school for 16 or 18 months.

No, you don't need a degree in any specific field.
To be considered for field work, it is vtial to have a degree. But for the non-field work no degree is needed.

1.) Not much. I think it's less than 900 a month when not deployed. (Check the Army or GAO website for exact amounts.)

2.) No.

3.) Possibly, but it depends on your MOS. If you have an MOS that is non-combative, then probably not.

4.) Pretty good if you're in a combat or support role.

5.) If you want to get into the CIA or FBI, yes. If you just want some extra cash for school and don't want to go to war, then no.

Thanks for the reply.

I Understand bootcamp is 8 weeks long. How do I go to school and bootcamp at the same time? How does that work out?

Im definetly going into Law Enforcement. Whether its the Cia, Fbi,Marshalls, or Police detective. So Im probably going to Join the guard.

What is the "post" training?

Also will being fluent in greek help any?

The biggest thing that is in my way of the national guard is school.

I mean what if I get deployed, what am I going to do about school?

And school is more important then the guard to me.

Sorry for all the questions.

You don't go to school and boot camp at the same time. We had a couple of NG guys in basic training who were in college, they had to skip a semester or two in order to fit in basic training and AIT.

If you want to persue DLI, Greek would be a huge help in getting a language spot.

If you get deployed while in college? Not too sure about that one, but I would imagine that you would be shipped out with the rest of them.

If school is more important, then don't join until you graduate.

On a side note, I work for one of the above listed agencies. I do support work, and I don't have a degree. I do have 7 years experience in the military which directly translated into the civilian field I am in. I will say this though, I got lucky when it came to promotions. I looked around and researched and managed to find a GS-14 position that was perfect for me.

Good luck on finding what you want.

Thanks Freeballin.

Im going to postpone the National Guard until I graduate then, since im not going to take any time off.

What is "DLI"?

thanks.

Special Agent. My question is, however, would it be more wise to take molecular Biology or Accounting? Could I still be a Special Agent if I had a PhD in Molecular Biology?

Yes. I know one person at the CIA with an advanced degree in biology.

Although you'd find better employment at the CDC.

Woul they put you into a field agent job? Doubtful. Chances are a PhD in mol. bio would earn you a desk job churning out loads of hypothesis re: displacement of molecules in water reserves or some other interesting yet not exciting topics.

So would you say that an accounting degree would serve me better? Also, what's CDC?

No degree is really better than another, but in terms of putting your advanced degree to use (unless you like wasting tons of cash) getting a PhD in mol. bio and joining the FBI as a grunt would be tragic.

I suggest you get a degree in something you enjoy, even the arts (if you enjoy that). There are tons of jobs for artists in the FBI and CIA.
