When my mom was a teen she had to roll with some of the gang kids at school, she wasnt in a gang and she didnt hang with them after school but she pretty much had to do it because someone from another gang just randomly started messing with her and need protection to stop being mugged, beaten and harassed, sometimes kids "act" gangster to protect themselves, I hope now that his "cover" is blown he doesnt get beaten or shot, hopefully he was just doing it for shits and giggles/to look "cool".
