Fat Kids

God when will people stop allowing thier children to destroy thier futures??
When I have kids Im making it a RULE that there will be no crap food in the house at any time. Lunches will be packed. breakfast will be healthy. I will never take my kids to eat fast food or give them shit as a "reward".
I will honor whatever choices they make in the future and I wont force them to do anything. But hopefully they will learn by example and tkae a healthy lifestyle along with them.
I think the way some parents feed thier children and let them remain so inactive is downright child abuse.

sorry for the rant. But I was just in Chicago last weekend and I swear to god, 95% of KIDS I saw were fuggin obese! made me sick.

I have a overweight step-daughter. =-( We cook normal healthy meals and don't keep much junk in the house. I'm not sure how she eats at school, though. It's really tough Wulfgar. She doesn't have much self discipline about things, and I think she sneaks food. Plus, you don't want to destroy their self esteem by harping on them about what they eat. Hopefully, she will thin out when she hits puberty. Many people in her family were chubby before puberty and thinned out afterwards.

thats common for kids to grow up and out, up and out
and i would never harp on them about anything
all im saying is I would present healthy options ONLY just for the simple fact id feel i was doing my child the best service I could by leading by example

if they choose to go thier own way afterwards i would respect that too...but at least i would know in my heart i did what i could without getting Nazi on em

dullboy says that many "experts" claim efforts to control or limit the food intake of children does not work.

in fact, there is a body of evidence that suggests that obesity is primarily a genetic determination.

dullboy recalls that there was a recent study of identical and nonidentical twins, which estimated that childhood obesity is like 90% heredital.

dullboy thinks that a lot of fat people are reproducing while the skinny ones go to the beach and the gym.

Heridity is a large part of it, but lifestyle is big too. Not just the junk food aspect, but a lot of the food we buy is processed. & the activity level is way down amongst kids today. Not just because of computers, but protection. When I was a kid, we were able to wander far & wide, throughout the day, only returning for supper. Now, because of all the freaks arouind, parents are more protective, don't let kids wander, & kids get bored with their own neighbourhood, so they watch T.V. or play vido games for entertainment.

ya..you cant knock genetics

but i think parents need to do what they can to help thier kids have a healthy active lifestyle

lots of temtations out there today though with the net and games. but it shouldnt stop parents from doing thier best.

Genetics and lifestyle co-mingle tho. I firmly believe that the reaction a fat person experiences when a high-GI carb hits their system is different than the reaction a normal-weighted person has. Think of it similarly to how an alcoholic experiences alcohol.

It's a choice, but that choice has a *ton* of genetics behind it.

It boild down to the simple fact people need to take responsibility for themselves

and parents need to take responsibility for themselve and be co-determined enough to take responsibility for thier children too and do thier best to set them on the best path possible

maybe its just me..but that path doesnt involve Mickey D's, Krispy Kremes, and In-and-out

kids don't run around anymore. plain and simple. when i was a kid i'd run all over the damn place. chase the dog, shoot hoops, climb trees, swing (not that kind of swinging), ride my bike. kid's energy output is way low compared to the density of calories in all the foods available and made popular by the overabundance of marketing on TV, movies, games etc.

Ever follow a school bus through a neighborhood? They stop at every house! Make'em walk. If parents are worried about safety, they should walk to on central location and meet the kids as they get off the bus. And take away the playstations and gamecubes and take away the 32" widescreen tvs with full access cable that is in each one's room. Make their butts go outside. Also, in most households, both parents work. maybe doing things together as a family on the weekends would help. And I don't mean going to the movies and pigging out on a gallon of popcorn, go hiking or bike riding or white water rafting. Something that requires actually MOVING.

Yeah, its challenging. My family always had bean pole kids, I'm challenged as to what to do with a child who is chubby. Keeping her self esteem high is my number one concern. I think both genetics and lifestyle play a part.

u got to realize that its a disease also.

It's a double edged sword, & not just with girls anymore. As they become teenagers, anything a parent says that is in the least bit judgemental sends them into A spiral of depression.

it's ok. I dont disagree with what you have said. I prefer a healthier diet for my son as well.

"Fat people got no reason, fat people got no reason to live.
They got great big smelly feet
They're always looking for something greasy to eat
Don't want no fat people, Don't want no fat people 'round here."

I dont really mean that.

My wife and I are both fairly health conscious. During the week we eat mainly lean meat and green vegetables. Our kids are still pretty young. . .we have 6 yo twin girls and a 7 mo boy but, they are being raised in a house where nutrition is a priority. We loosen up a little on the weekends (pizza and what-not) but, during the week we keep it clean. When our kids ask for a snack they get some carrots or an apple or something like that. So far, it's working out great. Our girls are lean, pretty and active, just like their mom. The fat kid syndrome is a big concern in our house and we're living proof that you can be happy AND healthy.

The whole "they just won't eat vegetables" thing is a BS cop-out. We're the parents and they eat what we tell them to eat. . .they eat what we do. . .my wife and I are their living example and they seem to be paying attention. Frankly, if you get them started off on the right foot from the very beginning, they don't really know any different.

i'm sick of this everyone needs to live forever attitude. let `em have a coronary, so i can breathe their air.
