Last ever official photo of LCDR Davis, He is center top. They were reforming the diamond after doing the starburst. To give the illusion of wingtip to wingtip flight, the planes fly at different altitudes. In the diamond pattern, the trailing plane flies the lowest. So if the head plane in the diamond starts it at the wrong altitude, that could have been a factor in the crash.

Just watched the video like three times in a row. The A-4's were a little more maneuverable than the F/A-18 so there are elements of the show that aren't done anymore.

I've probably seen them perform 40 times, not including their practice sessions at NAS Pensacola. The Beach show they do here every July is pretty cool. They are probably the best recruiting tool the USN has in its arsenal. So they play a role in our national defense, if nothing else but a forward projection of our commitment to excellence.
