Facing your Fears

nycgirl

New member
On Sunday, I faced a fear that paralyzed my life for 7 years. I got on a plane. No drugs or alcohol. The fear of flying kept me from enjoying one of the things I love to do . . . travelling and seeing the world. I'm proud of myself yet embarassed at the same time. Prior to Sunday, Amtrak and I were on a first name basis. The thought of flying would make me sick. I would have a mild panic attack every time I attempted to book a flight via a website. I missed out on a lot of opportunities and fun because of that fear. I'm looking forward to more flights.

Have you had to face a fear head on?? Are you so afraid of something that its holding your life back?? Do you plan on doing anything about it? Or, are you okay with the status quo?

Discuss.

I faced one of my biggest fears when I decided to get on stage. I had mild panic attacks months before, just thinking about walking out infront of hundreds of people.

After that first comp, when all was said and done.. i felt so much better. No one threw tomatos at me, lol. I lived thru the experience, no harm done.

I was afraid of flying also, my trip to atl was a whopper. Just had some scary dreams and such that put me on edge. I think every time I step on a plane I get that worried feeling. Not panic attacks, just a bit uneasy.

that is some good stuff, nycgirl. being able to fly is important.

i think again and again that i must go to europe and spend some time.

I get freaked out when I'm in any type of claustrophobic environment. I started sweating and get really irritated.

Also, for a while....for some reason I had a fear of letting go. But it was always of something/someone negative in my life. My personal diagnosis was that it became so consistent and repetitive in my life that I wasn't quite sure how to function without it. In a strange (unhealthy) way, I formed a codependency on it. So I was scared shitless to let go of it. :worried:

Thanks jackangel & chefbone.

I knew when I took a bus to my destination on Friday that this fear was getting out of control. I believe things happen for a reason. For some strange reason, flying was my only option on Sunday.

I've been to Europe. After awhile churches, castles & museums all start to look alike. I want to go to the Carribbean and see more of the U.S.

I had some god awful shit happen to me at an early age. I know i'll never be able to deal with all my deamon's until I face the people responsible. I'm not so much afraid to confront them, I'm afraid I will kill them if I confront them. So for now I just have to live with my deamons.

i used to have a fear of talking on the phone years ago...very true and very serious. i would drive some place or to the person i needed to talk to instead of talking on the phone...now, you cant shut me up...LOL

are panic/anxiety attacks more common than i think?

seems like a lot of people have had them. i thought i was an oddball cuz i had one about 6 months ago for my first and presumably last time.

it was awful though, i seriously thought i was gonna be the first healthy 22 year old to ever drop dead from a heart attack.

I have been afraid of deep water since I was a child, (my cousin tried to drown me).

2 years ago I went to Cuba. We went on this excursion and part of it was stopping at this beauitful cave for swimming.

I was just watching everyone having fun swimming in the water, the water was so clear, and beauitful, but also happened to be 30 meters deep :worried:

I sat there and thought to myself it was time to face this fear of mine, and I got up and jumped right in.

Xanax was my best friend when I flew for the first time to costa rica for our honeymoon a few months ago. I popped a couple 5mg xanax and didn't last 15 minutes before I had passed out. I would wake up every 30 minutes or so, loko out the window and be amazed at what I saw then pass out again. Both there and back were painless.

lots of things. they seem small now, but they seemed huge at the time. i was always a bit of a thinker rather than a doer, and then all of a sudden you find yourself in the hotseat for somethign youve watched happen over and over, but never actually had to do....lol the scariest one was probably to do with a girl ;)

my first day at work as a pharmacist was fairly monumental. i was scared silly, but i was way past the point of no return, so i figured, well...if im going to get fired...lets hope i somehow manage to do it stylishly ;) (im not kidding. i gave myself 70 30 against ;) )

Same here. But ya know, sometimes in life you never get the opportunity to face those people...whether you'd like to or not. :( I had to learn to forgive and get on with my life. We all know we can't change the past....but I've quickly figured out that there's no way for me to move forward in life if I'm turned around staring at the past. (be it, emotionally, mentally, spiritually, etc)

Mightymouse has a great quote in his signature line..."I do not allow myself to stay angry at someone because that would be giving them free rent in my head." That's a great way to look at situations/obstacles/people that you've had to overcome/deal with in life.

Congrats NYC.

I actually have overcome all of my fears. Most of them I overcame through military training - the classic fears like heights, water, tight spaces etc I overcame through various schools where you have to confront these things. I was scared shitless, but I did it, and when I finished, I literally felt reborn.

I also used to be very afraid of pubic speaking. When I was a kid I used to stutter in class and was afraid to be called on even if I knew the answer.

I overcame some of that through the military, and after that I was lucky enough to meet a few people who were very good friends and mentors. With time I have become a very good speaker. Now I don't shut up. :)

You can overcome anything.

I have a fear of heights and public speaking. I don't plan to jump out of any perfectly good planes so that one doesn't bother me too much. I plan to join a Toastmaster's group soon though.

well i think the fear runs deeper than that. in reality its actually a fear of control. so you may have faced it but not conquered it. i suspect you will still be afraid the next time you need to fly. good luck.

I'd always been scared to pose nude but decided to just be brave and do it a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't scary. I was with an artist I felt totally comfy with. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Heights. I had a fear of heights. I got over it when I took a trip to the center of the Grand Canyon on a mule. I also did a ropes course in the jungle of Costa Rica. Trees there were hundreds of feet in the air. Did a gondola ride through the jungle too.

I agree. Flying was the last thing I had issues about control. I dealt with the other issues (love, work, etc.).

I never said I conquered it, just faced it. I don't think words can describe the fear I had. Anyone that can justify riding a train for 20 hours to Orlando from NYC, is more than just nervous. Or has looked into taking Amtrak cross country to San Francisco, is more than just nervous.

I know I will be nervous the next flight, but at least I will get on it.

Thanks, but I had absolutely no choice. I think the reason why I never got on one before was not only because I let the fear control me, but I knew I had other options.

How come you are so committed to never fly again?

Same here. I would do it again too, but with a different photographer. I think I will schedule another shoot (probably an outdoor shoot) in the Spring. I want to train really hard over the Winter.

We have so much in common.

Mine is a nude pinup painting. But it's tasteful. I'll have it in my house and not take it down when my parents come over.

But I told him I want another one when I'm in better shape and blonde too. :)

I hae never flown but i would like to try it......of course I think ill be dramomined up the first time

I faced one a few years back. I'm claustrophic sometimes. Elevators don't bother me; mostly when I can't see or move. I think we were at DisneyLand in California. We got on this small submarine ride that rides along a track, under water obviously...tiny porthole windows. When the hatch closed I started to panic a lil and I wanted to get out. I just looked around and said if everybody else is fine then I am too. It worked.

Asian chicks are pretty high on the list.

Years ago when I was in the army, my wife was a nervous flier, but she did it. We went to Cuba 2 yrs ago & she almost had a nervous breakdown on the plane. She can't understand it 'cause the flight went pretty well, but she is terrified of flying again. She still wants to travel more though. What a trooper.

i suffered from vertigo as a child when exposed to height, inherited from my father who in turn inherited his fear from his mother...so, i started rock climbing at the age of 16 and found that fear focuses the mind and powers of concentration immensely and acts as injector to enable the body to do things previously thought not possible

Here's a good book for next time you have to fly.

I'm afraid of posting. I just had a breaktru. Or maybe it was a breakdown.

I'm not sure.

The first time I freeway wheelied. It was scary as heck to me but I knew I wanted to do it bad from watching others do it. I mean there is nothing cooler looking then a highspeed wheelie on a sportbike. But once I did it once I was hooked as you can tell by a majority of my threads.

And like Ferris Beullar said in in FB's Day Off about the Farari, I will say "if you have the balls to do a freeway wheelie I recommend it...it is so choice."

Good job NYC.

I am afraid of hieghts but don't avoid anything because of it.

Thanks. :)

Next thing on my list is getting my driver's license by the end of the year.

Some people may laugh at this but I have a terribly irrational fear of basements (stems directly from being accidently lost/left and locked in a basement as a very young toddler (2 ish) while my parents were look at a house that they eventually purchased and I grew up in).

I happen to work in a field that depending on the project I might find myself in a basement fairly often. Right now I'm in the middle of three new houses - two with home theaters in the basement - everytime I go down stairs I have to take a deep breath and hope I don't go flying down the stairs coz my legs are like jello.

It's truly the strangest thing ever and on the flip side I love heights and can climb an unfinished roof with ease.

Go figure.

Not weird at all.

The one fear I left out is a really personal one, but i'll add it. I have a phobia about someone getting in my face like, just turning around and their face is within an inch or so of mine. My kids will just walk up to me and without warning get really close like that cause they want to kiss me and it makes me lose my breath.

The fear or phobia, what ever you may call it stems from being nearly raped as a teenager. Waking in the middle of the night at a friends house with her brother in your face and struggling to get away.

My kids of course don't know why I panic when they sneak up on me like that and its something I try not to act on but i find my self immedately gasping for air and just being in that same panic mode.

good for you!

you make rational decisions based on facts. You are safer flying than you are going to the grocery store by car on saturday night.
