Yep, I let it go and it got worse and now I pay the price. There is a lot of foods and drinks that I can't have anymore and the chest pains are really bothersome.
Acid backing up out of the stomach and ending up in places it shouldn't will cause permanent damage. This damage doesn't happen overnight, but would you really want to find out just how long it does take?
It can lead to many complications including:
- rot your teeth.
- destroy vocal chords, voice box and throat in general by causing growths both cancerous and benign and narrowing and inflamation making it difficult and painful to swallow food, sometimes not allowing you to even swallow your own saliva.
- affect your lungs ie asthma among other complications.
- damage the esophagus, among other things, cause a condition known as Barrett's syndrome which is a precursor to esophageal cancer for which there is no known cure.
Long term drug therapy and in the most severe cases, surgery, will help alleviate the symptoms of GERD. Occasional heartburn may be unpleasent, but it certainly isn't going to kill you. But if you have chronic symptoms and ignore them you most certainly will not only suffer but have decreased quality of life and yea, end up dead.
