Explain the PLANET of APES ending... could ya?

I watched it last night, tried to pay attention the details. Didn't have a chance to watch it over again. Did he jump in into the past twice? Or past, then future? At first, I thought he simply existed in an alternate universe different from what we know as reality. But then I thought maybe something happened where the monkeys change time to take over earth. Also explain about his ship, the amount of time it was there, and everyone that came after him.

I read an interview with Tim Burton. Basically, he said the ending is designed to fuck people up. It makes no sense 'cuase it's not supposed to make sense.

Leaves things open for a sequel though...

That's what I figured, but I still don't like that answer. Kind of like trying to figure out the meaning of life while you're tripped out. You think about it so much you can almost convince yourself you know the answer, when reality knows there really is none. Boo.

I just found the official site, this is supposed to be the real explanation for the plot of the movie. I'm still not sure who or what the monkeys were that Thad organized to rebel against the humans and what time it was or whether the Ape planet was actually earth.
