Experienced car mechanics. Question.

My ABS and 4WD lights on the dash go on all the time. The mechanic says the 'ABS modulator' is shorted and needs replacing. The part alone is $1250. ouch. He says if I find a cheaper one from a junk yard or anywhere... he'd replace it for me for $250. Not bad. Can I buy one of these online? I tried a quick search with no luck.

2001 Nissan Pathfinder LE 4wd with auto option and a dial 4wd selector... in case that matters.

How the hell do these things go bad? Could it have gotten wet from rain and shorted out? The truck has 25k miles on it and is a 2001. LOW miles... it just sits in the driveway.

Anyway, thanks for any input on where I can find one. I don't trust junkyards. I'd rather get it from an online source.

That was helpfull.

GL, do you have one of those pick apart auto yards near you? May want to give that a shot.

Thanks. That was my next move if I couldn't find it online. I'd have to find the same exact model/year etc... which is hrd to do. If I could find it on Ebay or somewhere I'd go for it, but a couple of sites I've already visited bring me all the way through their prompts until the end just to tell me "We don't have that in stock." lol

I could drive without it and just have the light on all the time. Who needs ABS? lol Oh yeah, 4wd too. Hiow the hell does the ABS modulator make the 4wd light go on? Fuck!

In case the real mechanics are paying attention, I found this...

FAQ..... **********QUOTE...

When nearing to a complete stop or pulling into a parking space on dry pavement, my ABS seems to come on unexpectedly and my stopping distance is increased. Is my EBCM bad and causing this problem?

Not necessarily. Based upon customer feedback, the problem is corrosion of the front wheel sensors. Try the following to cure the problem:

You will need to remove the front wheel sensor from the hub. Make sure both sensor and hub are absolutely clean beforehand. This will assure that no dirt will not fall into the hub and bearings when the sensor is removed. A single Allen head bolt is all that holds the sensor in place.

Remove the sensor and plug the hole with a paper towel or clean rag. Then clean all of the rust from the sensor and its mating surface on the hub. Do the same to the hub and its mating surface to the sensor. Use a gasket scraping tool or wire brush to remove all traces of rust; keeping it out of the hole where the sensor goes. Spray the areas with carb cleaner to remove any remaining residue. Be careful not to let carb cleaner flow inside of the hub as it will dilute the bearing grease.

Apparently, rust formation on the cast iron hub pushes the sensor up just a few thousandths of an inch dropping the voltage low enough to cause ABS engagement at low speeds. This may also cause the 4WD service light to come on as well.

Reinstall the cleaned sensor into the cleaned hub and test the system by driving. If it works normally, then spray the hub and sensor with several coats of rubberized undercoating spray to prevent any further corrosion

****end quote* hmmm That may be it!

Also, the website I got this from offers to rebuild your module for $200. Not bad. Over $1000 savings.

I have reviewed your inquiry and will forward the information to the appropriate parties (lumberg) who will assess your situation and provide feedback in a timely fashion (probably never) in order to assist you with your service needs (get a new car)

lol Smurfs, I wanted to dedicate a thread to him with this but knew he was busy.

This site... http://www.modulemaster.com/index.html looks great. I talked with the owner/mechanic/tech about my problem and I will be sending my module to them for rebuilding. $200 or so for a rebuild is a far cry from $1500 I was quoted today.

I'd love to know what lumberg thinks about it. We had originally thought it was the "corrosion of the front wheel sensors", but going through the #9 pin test, the codes 3-5 and 3-1 told us faulty module.

He thinks it's a Bosch module. Same as VW and Audi...

Should I pay $240 for a mechanic to take it off, I mail it, get it back, then the mechanic reinstall it. or Should I take it off myself(six screws) then mail it and reinstall it myself?

So, it cost me $150 today to ground the #9 pin and tell me it was the module. wtf? I just did that in 5 minutes myself with some instruction.

blah blah

Thanks. Come on lumberg!
