From what I understand in many countries (I think China is one of them) children are actually given up by their parents at very young ages to go live in dorms, etc to become competitors. So does it really matter if that child is ready for competition at age 12 or age 7 or age 17? They've lived their entire lives for one thing = a shot at greatness through their athletic ability.

If you got beat by a 12 yr old/a 7 year old/a 17 year old or a 70 year old - you still got beat.

STFU about it and accept your defeat with humility and grace and enjoy the fact that you were bested by a worthy opponent.

Cindy - these kids have been training like animals since they were like 2!! They have ONE GOAL in mind - to win. Their entire lives revolve around that ONE directive so what exactly are they being "kept safe" from?

A 17 year old Olympic level athlete didn't just begin training the year before. They have trained in most cases, their entire lives since they could barely walk!

Can anyone tell me what good proving these girls are younger than 16 will do? They lose their medals, some other girls get medals even though they weren't the best or second best. and China as a nation is embarassed. Once one scandal is found who know what else will happen.... and if the gov't is involved in providing fake docs/passports that just gets worse and worse. Then what, china closses its doors again out of embarasement?

Sure that may be over the top but really... its done its over with no one cares. had these girls lost no one would give a crap. This should have all been taken care of well before the events.
