Evangelist Jimmy Swaggart Threatens To Kill Gays

(Toronto, Ontario) A Canadian television station has apologized publicly to viewers for a telecast of American evangelist Jimmy Swggart's television program in which he threatened to kill gays.

The program, aired last week on Omni 1, a Toronto multicultural station, and throughout the US, has also prompted an investigation by the Canadian Radio Television Commission, the government agency which regulates television.

During the program, a rambling sermon by Swaggart who is trying to rehabilitate himself after an arrest for soliciting a prostitute, the televangelist turned to the subject of gay marriage.

According to a transcript of the program, Swaggart said: "I'm trying to find the correct name for it ... this utter absolute, asinine, idiotic stupidity of men marrying men. ... I've never seen a man in my life I wanted to marry. And I'm gonna be blunt and plain; if one ever looks at me like that, I'm gonna kill him and tell God he died."

The remarks were met with applause from his congregation.

The program was taped at Swaggart's ministry in New Orleans where voters Saturday agreed to amend the Louisiana constitution to bar same-sex marriage.

The CRTC investigation was prompted by a complaint by a viewer in Ottawa. It is not known if any complaints had been made in the US where the show appears on stations in all 50 states. A spokesperson for the FCC which regulates television in the US did not return calls for comment Sunday.

Toronto station Omni 1 reviewed the tape after a complaint was made. A spokesperson called the remarks "a serious breach" of Canadian broadcast regulations.

Omni 1 is owned by Rogers Communications a conglomerate that controls the largest cable and cell phone companies in Canada and also owns television and radio stations and a publishing company.

Under Canadian law hate speech is a criminal offense. Broadcast lawyers say that both the station and Swaggart could be charged in addition to any penalty imposed by the CRTC.

The FCC has wide powers for imposing fines. Last month the Commission fined 20 CBS television stations more than $25,000 each over the Janet Jackson bare breast incident at the Super Bowl.

In 1987 Swaggart in a tearful sermon begged forgiveness from his followers after being found with a prostitute.

Starfish laughed her ass off when she read that. I saw it on Jay Leno last night, so I did a search to see if it was true.

Well, after all, doesnt the bible say to kill gays?

In the old testament, it claims that God would sometimes strike people dead for refusing to repent from their sins.(Homosexuality being a sin according to the bible) Homosexuals as well as other sinners. Nowhere since the days of Jesus, does it say to kill gays.

Well not all Christians share that view. I'm a Christian, and I do not hate homosexuals, nor would I kill one for just looking at me. Christ taught love and forgiveness, not hatred and murder. So any gay men or women who are reading this, please do not think ALL Christians hate you or even think less of you for being gay.

Televangelist... now there is a group that makes me sick to my stomach sometimes...

After all the fucking you do you call yourself a christian?

let me guess, you fuck around all week, and just repend on sundays and continue that cycle?

No offense intended, it just seems the term "christian" is thrown around very loosely these days.

Well if you want to get TECHNICALLY Sunday is not even the Sabbath... no I do not go to church. I read my bible at home, and my prayers are between God and I.

So, guess I am going to Hell for having sex, orb?

Are you going to hell for having sex while unmaried? well, aparently that is a sin so you must repent, and if you dont repent you are going hell.

Personally, I dont give a shit and I am not a christian, its just it seems there are christians who do "worse" shit than I do, and it makes me go "WTF is going on here?"

Also, if you end up in hell, I might see you there.

bet ya 10 bucks he fucks guys up the ass himself when no ones looking.

9 times out of 10 -- when someone is soo adamant about hating gays and the gay lifetsyle -- is because they're "threatened" by it, and it's their own fears that they're gay that initiate that prejudice.

I'm straight. Like totally straight. Which means i could care less about gays or what they do. They could stand in front of me and wave hi and i'd just wave hi back. Big deal.

do you know he was arrested twice for having knowin prosutes in his car. do a seach on it

That doesnt suprise me.

Im not religious but I am open minded and have been recently attended church.

I have also yet to meet a real christian, that actually "practices what they preech".

I don't think Mr. Swaggart is really in a position to be judging anyone else. He kind of needs to work on that hate issue he has.

Biteme surfing gay.com is funny :rainbow: ;)

Mr Swaggart has nothing to worry about from us homos.

As ugly as he is, no self respecting homo would give him the time of day, much less a dinner date.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news orb, but any sex outside of marriage is considered adultery from a Biblical standpoint. Read Matthew 5:27-30, Jesus explains it quite clearly. Paul also addresses the issue in 1Cor 7.

I'm not calling you out on the issue orb, it's between you and God. I learned a long time ago that it's pointless to single out issues like this (premarital sex, homosexuality, etc.) because doing so causes one to lose sight of the bigger picture.

i.e.

Hypothetical situation: Let's say you or I (or any other Christian for that matter) encounter someone who is not a believer, and through conversation learns that this person is engaged in a lifestyle that is clearly outside of Biblical standards. We'll use homosexuality as an example. The Bible clearly and undeniably states that this lifestyle is an abomination in Gods eyes.

O.K., we've got that established.

Now, say the abovementioned believer somehow manages to convince this person that their lifestyle is unacceptable to God and they agree to repent 100% of said lifestyle. Exactly what has said believer accomplished?

Absolutely nothing!

Does their repentance of this one "sin" in their lives make them "right with God?"

No!

Why?

Because although this person may have repented of one particular sin in their life, what about all the rest of the sin in their life? Trying to convince someone to repent of one sin at a time is like trying to fell a forest one leaf at a time. It just ain't gonna happen.

Leave these individual issues alone. Encourage the person to develop their own relationship with God, and let HIM deal with the individual issues in their lives.

That being said, I agree that Swaggert and the most of these so-called "Christian" (and I'm using that term VERY loosely here) TV evangelists are doing FAR more damage than good!

To wrap it up, read Matthew 7:21-29. Remember those words.

A agree. While their are many good radio preachers, tv only has one and that is Billy Graham.

More or less what I beleive. Leading a Christ like life is not trying to figure out and correct all of your sins, but rather to have a relationship with God, try to be a good person, help others and tell others that Christ came here to forgive whever sins they fall short on, not to judge them. If we must identify and seek atonement for every sin in our lives in order to enter heaven, then His sacrifice ment nothing.
