Essential legal supplements for AAS

Hey all, found this on another forum and found it very informative. Seems like it's a list everybody should have unless they have already memorized most of it like some of us! Let me know what ya think.

Supplements for Steroid Users

A lot of steroid users know a great deal about steroids, but are lacking when it comes to the latest and greatest in supplement information and new products. This guide is a simple overview of some supplements that can (and in some cases, should) be used during or after a steroid cycle for various reasons.

Liver/Kidney Protection

NAC
NAC increases gluthione levels in the lungs and liver and helps protect against liver damage done by drugs. NAC is so effective that it is the drug used in the emergency room for patients who have overdosed on drugs such as acetaminophen. NAC is also helpful for kidney problems. Common doses are 1200mg a day in mutliple dosages.

ALA
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a antioxidant which works in the same mannerism as NAC, by increasing gluthione levels. It also prevents against free radical formation and recycles Vitamin C and E in the body. There has been some recent information that the prefered form is the R-ALA isomer, but there is no in vivo evidence showing this to be the case. Typical dosages are 300mg 3 times a day.

Milk Thistle
Milk thistle is most commonly the first line treatment to protect against the liver. It has been shown to prevent gluthione breakdown in the liver. However, as mentioned by William Llewellyn in Anabolics 2004, milk thistle can possibly act to inhibit protein synthesis by way of its anti-inflammatory action in the body. Milk thistle can potentially inhibit COX-2 in the same way NSAIDs such as aspirin can. Still, it is one of the most popular choices for steroid users. Dosages usually range at 1g a day or higher.

Cranberry Juice Extract
Cranberry Juice Extract is commonly taken to help prevent against kidney problems during cycles of drugs that are known to be hard on the kidneys, such as oral drugs and trenbolone. Although it is doubtful that cranberry juice acts to help protect the kidneys directly, it might help and it will also help the urinary tract.

Blood Pressure & Cholesterol

Guggulsterones
Guggulsterones have been shown in several studies to help lower cholesterol by limiting some fat absorption in the gut. It can also help increase conversion of T4 to T3 in the liver, which may help decrease fat stores and increase nutrient partioning. Guggul can also help reduce acne. Typical dosages are 300mg of the extract or synthetic E&Z guggul 3 times daily.

Hawthorne Berry
Hawthorne Berry can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. See here for more info: Link.

Plant Sterols
such as beta sitosterol have been shown to significantly lower cholesterol and help with prostate issues.

Fish oil
Fish Oil and omega3s can help increase a good lipid profile and lower blood pressure. Fish oil has a wide variety of benefits including helping with depression and decreasing inflammation. 3-6g of fish oil daily is a typical dosage.

Acne

Vitamin B5
B5 is commonly megadosed to help acne. Dosages of 6-10g daily or high help many people reduce and eliminate acne. Start out slowly and work your way up to the higher dosages.

Prostate Issues

Saw Palmetto Extract
Saw Palmetto is the good old standby for helping prostate issues. It has been shown in numerous studies to help reduce prostate issues and BPH. 160mg of the extract used twice daily is the most common dosage.

Estrogen Control

We all know about Nolva, Clomid, Arimidex and all the other anti-estrogens. But if you're ever in a bind and neat an anti-e during or after your cycle, there are some fairly effective ones available to suppress estrogen.

6OXO
6OXO is an mild aromatese inhibitor, which works to elevate testosterone levels significantly, but doesn't lower estrogen that much. It is commonly used post cycle during prohormone cycles, but would work okay for steroids in combination with the typical Nolva or Clomid for an extra boost. The most common dose is 600mg per day.

Testosterone Boosting Supplements

Tribulus
Tribulus potentially has the ability to increase testosterone levels through increasing LH. Although no independant studies back up this claim, a large manufacturer's inhouse studies have shown this. A lot of people like to use it to help with their libido as well.

ZMA
ZMA is a blend of chelated zinc and magensium which has been shown in the manufacturers study to increase testosterone and IGF levels. This would be beneficial to take all the time, since athletes are commonly deficient in zinc. Zinc can boost testosterone on its own, and has numerous other benefits, such as the possibility it can lower SHBG. Most people take 3 capsules before bed, away from calcium, for the added benefit of helping to induce a deeper sleep.

Flax seed oil
Flax can help increase testosterone by simply increasing fat intake. It also has many of the same benefits of fish oil.

Cortisol Lowering Supplements

Phosphatidyl Serine
"PS" has been shown in several studies to lower cortisol levels when taken in high enough dosages. Some people take it in the morning and post workout at dosages around 600mg or so.

Ginko
Ginko can significantlly help lower cortisol, according to several studies. The typical dosage is probably 1-2 caps 2-3 times daily.

Phenibut
Myo Phenitropin
Phenibut is an amino acid modification of GABA, which can help reduce stress and potentially act as an adaptogen to reduce cortisol in high stress. It can also help with relaxation and improve mood.

7-KETO-DHEA
7-Keto-DHEA, is another suppliment that can also possibly lower cortisol.

I know bodybuilding.com has NAC, but most local healthfood and supplement stores (in Canada as well) have it too, it is not specialized to bodybuilding so should be easy to find. If they don't know what you want when you ask for NAC, ask for N'acetyl cysteine (sp?).

in the ladies forum they say r-ALA is alot better than ala?

R-ALA is certainly better, and I believe the dosage is 3x smaller for same effect, I just plop the two together as ALA though.

Tyler's would be a more all encompassing liver protectant if you are looking for one supp, however for some using highly toxic 17aa's the use of both could be advised, or 3 or 4 elements stacked together. On my next cycle I am thinking of using MT, ALA, and NAC. Perhaps overkill, but you only get one liver after all.
