Equal pay for equal work?

Okay, we all know women earn 70% of what a man earns for equal work, whatever that is, and black men and women earn less also. My question is where do smokers fit in? My coworker takes 5-6 10-15 minute smoke breaks every day. As a white male should he still earn more than a non-smoking woman? How do white female smokers compare to non-smoking black men? Drop some knowledge on a brotha.
 
I worked with someone that claimed to have calculated the employee's average smoke break equals an extra two weeks of vacation per annum.
 
Isn't time off for child birth part of the difference between men and women? Where are the studies that prove all of this? I've heard this stuff before but never actually saw studies.

Cost factors outside of job content

Equal pay for work of equal value by women while an admirable principle is difficult to achieve by legislation. This is so because of the many cost factors outside of actual job content which are involved in employing women as opposed to men, and in evaluating their true payroll cost to the employer.

Legislation which is fair and equitable both to employees and employers must take into consideration these other cost factors. This would necessarily result in a cumbersome, confusing, and virtually unenforceable law. Some of these factors are:

(a) Greater absenteeism for women.—A recent industrial study of absenteeism indicated that the rate of time lost due to absenteeism is much higher for women than for men workers. This higher rate of absenteeism for women increased the cost to employers of employing women.

(b) Special protection under State laws for women.—Laws now in almost every State require varying degrees of additional protection for women workers. These laws restrict the number of hours women may work in a day and/or week; provide for longer meal and rest periods for women than for men; restrict or prohibit night work for women; restrict the type of work women may do and the physical location in which they may work; require additional facilities such as seats, lunchroooms, and toilet rooms for women.

While these laws are meritorious, they add considerably to the cost of employers employing women as contrasted to men.

The problem is equal pay usually doesn't translate to equal work. Years back I worked at a place where the male/female ratio was about 50/50. I'd say 80% of this job centered around physical labor (lifting). Now we had items that ranged in weight from 1 or 2 pounds all the way up to 500 or 600 pounds. We all got paid the same based on our seniority. Most of the women wouldn't even attempt to lift anything over 30lbs, they'd just wait for a guy to come along and do it for them. We also dealt with transporting HR's (Human Remains). The ladies wouldn't go anywhere near those, even if it was a light weight infant. If you were working on the same side of the warehouse as a woman you'd essentially have to do your job and half of hers. I will give two women there credit, they were every bit as good at their job as any of the guys. The other 18-20 though, worthless as tits on a boarhog.
 
ive always wondered that about smokers. I can see the smoking area from my office window and its always the same people out there, seems like all the time, just chillin, puffing a cigg, chatting.

I bet they used all their sick days in the year too. I've never met a smoker who did NOT use all their paid sick days each year. Go figure.

IF I worked with a man/woman who made more money than I, I'd buy him cartons of smokes each week. "Go take a smoke break anytime you wish-smoke 'dat bitch down to it's filter too".

I'd also offer to re-design his/her office for them in my spare time. Hell, his/her cancer stick lovin is only getting me closer to his/her job and newly designed office space. :)
 
I know people in my field of work that take 20 smoke brakes in a night that are like 1-2 mins . Then I know the people that take there 2 15min and half hour brake. I tell my workers that smoke they have to make a chose. You ether want 10-20 smoke brakes or your 2 15mins and your half hour. You can't have them both so make a chose. Almost every smoker I know would gladly give up all his other brakes to just have smoke brakes. Thats how all companies should do it.
 
there was a case here in australia where a non smoker wanted to go hang out with the smokers outside. he said that he would hold a rolled up piece of paper or an unlit cigarette while he did so, and claimed that it was only fair that he have the extra break time (i agreed with him)

his boss fired him

pretty fucked up, imo
 
At my previous job we had a guy that took at least one smoke break every 20 minutes. This wasn't the casual smoker either he burned each on to the filter. So lets say thats an average of 15min per hour. Plus he took the two 15min breaks and lunch (unpayed but 1hr) so he was doing at best 75% the time the rest of us were. The only reason he got away with it was he was smoke buddies with the owner.

So not only does he get paid for doing less work, he also raised the insurance premiums for the rest of us since it was a small company. Personally I think he should have been fired but that's just me.

You have a link to support this? Ive seen stats showing unmarried men and women earn the same pay.

market forces dictate what people get paid. Has nothing to do with gender.

It just so happens women gravitate more towards retail/hospitality jobs. While males go towards more skilled jobs. This all begins in high school when boys take computer, math and auto shop classes. Women: drama, music and family studies.

There is no "70%" factor in fast food for example. A male and female get paid the same.

The discrepency is in useless studies which never take into account differing occupations males and females take.

We can even take it a bit further. Hispanics make 70% what whites make. Disabled folks make 40% what abled folks make. Illegals make 30% what citizens make. We could do this all day.

I've never taken a "smoke break" at work, anyone who can't wait until lunch for a nicotine fix has an issue
 
My company is very strict.

Smoking is allowed in the designated smoking area only, during meal breaks only, non-compliance results in termination.

We have no female workers onsite, although other companies have been very happy with female machine operators, they make very safety conscious operators. Something I can't say for many of our crew.

Having female operators would require my company to double the amenities provided and make extra quarters available. Not cost effective. During shipping we sometimes have female temps.

If you are concerned about low pay, come to Western Australia, unskilled laborers here can earn 6 figures. Operators of course even more.

I believe that Finland gives non-smokes an extra week paid vacation each year, just for the reasons you stated.

You can't just blame that on women, my ex was a warehouse manager, lazy fuckers come in both genders. It's not YOUR responsibility to do THEIR job. They're supposed to do their share, and if they don't you take it to the supervisor. You complain, they get the hairy eyeball and they either shape up or get shipped out.

Of course, being female they might play the "I have a pussy and you might be able to stick your dick in it if you do favors for me" game but who's the stupid one there?

Let me tell you a little story. At our work we had 12 position that required one or two people at them at all times. The individuals at these positions changed daily to keep the job from getting too monotonous. One day the lead and I decided to do the next days scheduling a little different, we put all the females in one area and all the males in another. You want to know what happened? The next day was a COLOSSAL CLUSTERFUCK! Nothing was getting loading on time, trucks and planes were leaving late because of it. We had angry drivers and pilots, not to mention an angry united states postal service. We lost a bunch of money that day. Two of the females complained and actually admitted that they couldn't cover those positions unless a guy was around. The lead and I got in trouble because of our little experiment.

I slept with plenty of co-workers in my 10 years there but never in my department. I had a thing for flight attendants and ticket/counter agents. Even came close to marrying one :worried:
