Engagement rings?

How much do you make for a living? I would think 1,500 to 2,000 is fair and everyone with a 30k paying job should be able to scrounge that up, at the very least. It sounds like a lot but this is a lifetime investment in your most cherished thing--your future wife. Do it right.

Lifetime cherish my ass, not when the divorce rate is over 50%.

zales is only a go to if you have no real jewelry stores in the area.

if youy live near a big city, then go to their diamond district.

they have a formula for calculating it out - but it comes from DeBeers, so obviously it is full of shit.
I would have had to buy like crazy expensive ring.

my max is like $5K IMO - unless you are loaded, and even then, a $10K ring is gonna be huge and look annoying as hell.

I spent $3500 and she loved it. It was less than 2 months salary, but it didn't matter.

They told me brown was the hottest color in diamonds this year, so I think I did pretty good.

What the fuck.

My girl was talking about the engagement ring her friend got somehow the issue of cost got into the conversation (read: somehow I stealthily presented the subject of cost). I told her the "standard" is 2 months salary, so I told her that if I were working at McDonalds and wanted to marry her, I am supposed to buy her a $2,000 ring.

She promptly told me that was crazy and that she'd never want a guy to spend so much money on a ring for her and that all she would want is something that looks nice and does not blatantly say "hey look my ring is very expensive."

ahhh...

suck my cock, Debeers!!!! How do you like that shit???

I think the type and size of the diamond you are going to buy has to reflect your ladies taste and her hand....

Personally for myself I like rings that are quite simple, and I don't have the hands to support a huge diamond...it would look too gaudy, like costume jewerly. Plus this is a ring that she will be wearing everyday, and that should be considered when looking at rings.

As far as diamonds go a lot of their value is based on the clarity of the diamond, as well as the cut. Look at the stone and choose one that is not "cloudy"...

Congrats to you...and Best of luck!!

Warik - I had a similar experience, but then when the time actually comes, they want something nice.
not saying $20K nice - but they will quickly go back on what they said when the opportunity presents itself.
in the end, you have to decide if you care about such things.
I used to think I did (not getting a diamond and all that - now I've just deicided that if I'm gonna spend that much, I really hope a lot of people died to get that thing).
