I heard that training like this creates growth hormones in your body,

Training like that will lead to horseshit workouts and subsequent gains.

Agreed. AM, empty stomach cardio is one thing. But lifting is quite another. You don't want to lift on a totally empty stomach.

weighlifting on empty stomach won't help you build muscle... instead you'll be inducing yourself towards catabolisms and bye muscles!

If you workout first thing in the morning i would eat breakfast. But if you train mid-day i would wait 1-2 hours after eating to train, because if you train on your stomach alot of blood and other body functions are working on digesting your food instead of lifting weights.

Your body DOES need fuel to get started in the morning. Eat something that is easy to digest. I frequently eat this before a training session:

2 scoops of whey protein mixed with 1 1/2 cup of oatmeal and raisins.

You cannot train good on low blood sugar levels. Your strength will be substandard.

Can't lift in the mornings. I need at least two meals in me first. I'm strongest about 7 pm even if I feel tired after work.

I've tried lifting first thing in the morning, and hated it. However, it was even worse if I ate right before lifting. I didn't notice any problems with doing it on an empty stomach. My energy and strength were the same, and it was much more comfortable. But I'm not a morning person at all. Now I lift in the evenings, which is MUCH better. Way more strength and stamina at that time.

I must eat DIRECTLY before lifting...or I will be hungry mid workout.

personally, i lift and do cardio first thing in the morning on an empty stomach... i have tried eating before training too, just to see if i experienced any benefit but i did not... for me, strength and endurance are equal if i eat or not... and since i'm also doing cardio after my weight session, might as well maximize it's benefit by not eating...

If you ate 2 plates of pasta they day before you can be sure that you have enough liver/muscle glycogen stores, however... In the morning sugar levels are very low and you cannot really unleash the liver glycogen until you manipulate your inluline by eating something.

Therefore working out in the moring:

- Not eating at all before wieghttraining/cardio is not adviceable, unable to tap into your energy reserves, protein/muscle wasting can occur.

- Eating a large meal and training shortly afterwards is also not advicable as your body is busy with digestion in regards with working out with weights and especially for cardio purposes you spike too much insuline to access your fatreserves

- Eat a small meal, an apple and some cottage cheese or a protein shake.....This will be enough glycogen to get your brain functioning allowing for better CNS effort and also just elevates insuline to the minmimum point so that the liver glycogen can be accesed. Also keeping the meal small, your body don't put too much blood / energy into the stomach , therefor it doesn't hinder your weights training.

i agree........ i dont think there is anything wrong with eating or drinking some type of carb shake during your workout....... keeps away the distraction of a growling stomach.

I do a whey shake an hour before am work out thanks to some good advice on the boards here. I don't feel any diffrent while lifting but I have noticed an improvement on gains and faster recovery.

For over a year I trained at 6:30 AM, as that was the only slot my trainer had available. I would set my alarm for 4AM, get up and eat, and go back to bed. Then I would get BACK up at 6, eat again if I needed to (rare), and then hit the weights.

Now I train at 6PM, and the results are INFINITELY better.

Without something at 0530 am in my Stomach, I am worthless..

I compromise with a Big Glass of Skim(hydration) and 2 Scoops of Protein Factory Whey Isolate(Chocolate)

Maybe also a Banana if I'm really hungry...

Anything more and I get nauseous
