Doing great. Took the plunge to start my own company and things are busy. I need to hire some people to help me

I just started a new job. The hours are great, and I'll have my weekends off finally.

My income is above average for my part of the world, but still a long way from where I want it to be. It should roughly triple within 3-4 years, then I'll be doing "great." :)

So I went on an interview the other day. It is the same type of business I am in now, but a managerial position (different company). That same day the owner offers me the job & says she is going to put a package deal together for me. To make a long story short, after trying to negotiate, I felt I was worth more than she was offering. She tells me to stick it out for now and she promises I would be well rewarded with unexpected bonuses & raises. That answer wasn't good enough. I want what I want & I won't settle for less because I know I can get it & that I am wort it.

This lady just comes right out & says to me whats on every employers mind. "I can see you are on a different level than I am, I want someone who is going to put the company's needs before their own needs"

What?!?!

I told her of course I am, I come 1st & I am not going to sell myself sort.
This lady basically wanted me to work for free.

She told me I should be grateful that she way offering me $3000 more than what I make now.

Please keep your $3000.

Did I do the right thing?

You sure as hell did!! Never, ever sell yourself short.......and YOU come first, not the company.....

Yes, you did the right thing. The only industry where it should come before you to an extent is, in my opinion, the military, but that's a different story all together.

Good job on sticking to your guns.

i am blessed to own a thriving business but i am older than a lot of you. i paid my dues. absolutely nothing comes easy in this world that is worth having.

What kind of business? I want to start up something of my own in the future but I'm scared man.. that's a huge friggin risk.

nothing glamorous, i own an insurance agency. this is a tough business to get started in but extremely lucrative and secure if you stick it out and work really hard the first few years. everyone needs insurance. it is a surprisingly interesting field. i never get bored nor worry about job security.

That's debatable. If a $3K raise is selling yourself short then you've already sold yourself short by working where are you now. However, the only people who should be expected to put the company first are the owners.

doing well, but i always like to keep a good balance between work and social life. I work hard, but i'm not a slave to my job.

I am grossly underemployed but I have free childcare and my superiors love me (every employer has always loved me) so for now it will do. Dont even make enough money to pay the rent, but I am sure the judge will fix my ex's sorry ass when we go to court. LOL

Bella darlin', you did the right thing. The last thing you want to do is start off with a company that comes out of the gate with all sorts of promises... "unexpected bonuses" WTF?! That is double talk for "Dont bitch when you WONT be gettin' it!"

Anytime anyone makes any promises about sticking it out and good things come to those who wait is AN OUT AN OUT USER AND BOLD-FACED LIAR. If the interviewer had said, "We cant make any promises as we are growing just now, but we hope to be able to offer you.... blah, blah, blah." And if they are serious about it they WILL put the "blah, blah, blah" in writing, no questions asked.

You obviously feel you are being underpaid in your current position. Either ask for a review and raise or continue to put feelers out there and find a company that will pay you what you are worth. No one will ever volunteer more pay and better benefits unless you ask for it.

It would take more than a $250 per month raise to get me to change jobs
if I'm reasonably happy where I am.

I am currently making 6 figures and I am not complaining at all. My job is easy, fun, and lets me play...

Plus, I can afford to date now...:)
