Emmitt Smith

Thick dog

New member
Emmitt is just over 1,500 yards away from breaking Walter Payton's alltime rushing record. I think most people would consider Jim Brown, Walter Payton, abd Barry Sanders to be the 3 best running backs ever, a notch above your guys like Tony Dorsett, OJ, Earl Campbell, Dickerson, Sayers, etc. Granted Emmitt played behind a great line and in a great sysyem the majority of his career, but when he breaks that record,, and you take into account that he's second to Jerry Rice on the alltime Touchdown list and his Superbowl and postseason MVP honors and heroics, I think he has to be classified in the same class as Brown, Payton, and Sanders. He may not have been the pure runner that Sanders was, he may not have had the power of Brown or the strength and drive of Payton, but he had his own style and he had moves that I haven't seen from anyone other than Sanders. Barry Sanders has always been my favorite player, and I've always thought he was a little better than Emmitt, but when all is said and done, I think Emmitt deserves to be in the same class and I can say I think he was a better all around runningback. Of course, he wasn't quite as talented a runner, hehe.

I agree Thick,
Great backs:
1.Payton
2.Cambell
3.Sanders
4.Smith
5.Franco Harris
6.Kareem Abdul Jabar

Right, LOL, you know you are high when Patrick Ewing throws a touchdown pass, I remember that shit Thick, funny fucker.

I hope he doesn't break the record. I HATE Cowboys!!! But if his does...Much Props from Body

I do believe that E. James will eventually hold the record anyway.

I think Kareem was the first Dolphin in like 20 years to run for 1000 yards. If he didn't get 1000, I know he got damned close a couple of times. UCLA can sure as hell produce those Kareem Abdul Jabbarrs...

Hey Body, you may want to retract your statement on Jamal Lewis. Poor bastard is out for the season with a torn ACL.

Emmit is simply an awesome running back and deserves to break the record. He will be lucky to do it this season, if he does he will retire.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar had to change his name to Kareem Abudal after lew Al Cinder threatened to sue him for copy write infringment. (Weird...)

E Smith has done some great things with the ball, and even if he gets the record I wouldn't ever Compare him to Earl Campbell as far as being better....He just simply played longer

Earl Campbell only played 7 years...think about that, how many has each of those men who finished in the top 10 all time play and consider the fact Campbell got there in 7 years. His last 2 were injury seasons with the Saints

He was Rookie of the year and NFL rushing leader in the same year. THe oilers were nothing without him. Cause Dan Pastarini wasn't going to be throwing for as many touchdowns...He out rushed backs like OJ, Franco Harris, Tony Dorsett, I find that impressive as hell for a rookie....I think he also made his Heisman Victory a bit more stout then Ricky Williams did.

As for why he only played 7 seasons in the leage I would take into account that he Never had a Fullback blocking for him, his line with houston was ok but not Great compared to E. Smith has had with Dallas....But Man you look at some of the Greatest hits in the NFL and Earl Campbell has made a few of them. His Avg rushes per game throughout his time was over 35 carries. I think it was the 80 season where he had 50 carries against the Steelers.

I've never seen someone other then him that could carry 3 or 4 guys for another 3-5yds. The power he ran with is something I haven't seen either.

I think if he would have played 10-15 years like alot of those guys have he would have set the rushing Record.

i HATE emmitt for obvious reasons...

1. eagles
2. barry

i hate the lions more for the barry fiasco, and i am not too fond of barry's papa.. football around here without sanders is still boring, i used to watch eagles games and i would have the lions on "call back" mode so between plays i would flip to see if the lions had the ball.. that was the ONLY way i watched the lions.. on offense, with barry.. now, the lions are a latenight highlight and that is all...

i also believe barry's dad and his love for jim brown caused barry to NOT want to break the record.. it was a given that he would be the all time rushing leader and since he didnt get hit like emmitt and had a year on him in the league, barry would be the one at the top when all was said and done...

jim brown pulled that early retirement bullshit too, another thing that confuses me... did barry want to do the same thing? maybe he got hurt and nobody knew about it... who knows.. maybe he wants emmitt to get the record, retire, and then barry come back at 34 and take the record (hehe, i can dream).

barry sanders was the most exciting player in football history.. randy moss is becoming that guy as of now, people watch JUST to see what he did/does.

There also the theory that Barry didn't want to break the record while Payton was alive and sick, but he still hasn't come back since his passing, but who knows. All I know is he isn't playing and football isn't quite as exciting. HeHe, did Emmitt do a number on the Eagles over the years or what?

I live in Eagle/Skins/Ravens country...just mention Emmitt Smith and ten people want to kick your ass. It's too funny. I love going to Eagles games, sitting in the upper deck and yelling "EMMITT!!!!" . I have too buddies I go with who just crack up laughing because it gets alot drunks fired up.

wodin, i hear if you wear a cowboys jersey to a game and you go to the bathroom you are basically asking to be beaten silly...

i've only been to one game at the vet, vs. the broncos... the guy i went with was so intimidated that he kept his jacket on over the broncos jersey :) what a pussy.

barring an injury or something else, edgerrin will slash the record books with the types of seasons he has put up so far. Plus there are many more great runners now then in the past.

well I love emmit smith and the cowboys, but not their performances lately, you know I was thinking about this the other day and you know what he will break it, but I thought it would be classy if he just tied it and left him and walter at top tied to give walter his justice, but that is not gonna happen since emmit has about 5 years left in his gas tank.

That is very true MB, although with the court now in the stadium I can't make my mind up which is more entertaining.

Eddie George:

Since 1997, no one has rushed for more yards in the NFL than George, and he ranks behind only Earl Campbell for most yards rushing through the first five seasons by a Heisman winner. Only Eric Dickerson has more consecutive seasons (seven) of at least 1,200 yards rushing than George (five).

Eddie will own the rushing yardage record by time he retires.

Sweetness could do it all. Records or not, he's the best in my opinion. Barry Sanders was awesome too. I think he's a prick for being so modest about his achievements though. He should've had some balls and spoke up once in awhile. I don't care for Emmitt. He's not even on my top 10 list of running backs.

Too much bs talk about backs!

There have been a number of backs with the ability to set or break records...the main reason most of them don't is because they don't last taking those hits.....Earl took too many hits......E James will take more also....he's young now.....wait about 3 more years....when he becomes a marked man.....(see Terrell Davis) since Davis hit that 2000 mark....he has been banged up and hurt.....same thing happened to Eric Dickerson when he set the record 2,105.....he could have broken Payton's record too. if he had stayed with the Rams......It will be difficult for any back to break that record other than Sanders (if he comes back) and since records and yards mean nothing to him...he has never gave a shit about yards or records. He just wanted to win. Emmitt will probably break it because he runs the same way....(he was never fast....so hasn't lost a step...) and his line is still pretty good. It will be much harder though without a good qb in front of him.....but he is still a hoss....definitely a top 5 of all time backs

Sanders and Brown are botjh quiters. Sanders is a bitch. He quit playing football because he didn't like his team or coach. He thought they could not win w/o him, but the next year they did win w/o him. How Ironic.

Emmit has class and loyalty, which are 2 qualities missing these days.

I don't understand how you could call sanders a bitch. Put yourself in his position- You come to work everyday, put in all the extra effort, do more than what's expected of you, have a clear shot at becoming the greatest running back of all time, and consistently have 8-8 seasons. The closest he ever got to the super bowl was I THINK in 92' when they got spanked by the cowboys in the nfc championship. maybe im wrong though. It'd get a little old after a while. The lions have always been a mediocre organization since the 50's. In the 90's they hardly did anything to improve their team. they never made dramatic changes in either off or defense. As much as i hate to say it, throughout the 90's and 00' 01' the lions consistently beat the teams they aren't expected to, and lose to the ones they are supposed to beat. this year is the only year i can think of that's been a big change for them. They changed their president, coach, off coordinators, pretty much everythign. hell, even the strength and conditioning coach got fired. They installed the WCO and are going for a new look this year. This is a year barry would have liked to been around, he didn't forsee any changes within the organization though, so he left. I don't blame him. barry never got caught up in all the hoopla of scoring a td or anything like that. To some people winning matters more than setting a few records.

I don't think Sanders and Smith are even in the same league. If Sanders would have had the OL line that Emmitt had, he would have had the record b4 he retired.

I am so surprised no one mentioned Eddie George, the dude is awesome! I'd take him over the Edge or Fred Taylor anyday.
