I broke my hand once. Pretty bad too. Went to the ER, and they got the X-Rays backwards.

*nurse walks up on my left and grabs my arm while I'm sitting on the table*

Me: "Wtf are you doing?"
Nurse: "I'm gonna put a splint on it for now, you have to come back in the morning and get a cast."
Me: "But I didn't break my left hand."
Nurse "Well, your chart says you did!"

*pull my black/blue/purple shattered mess of a hand out of a bag of ice to my right*

Me : "Princess, I realize you are no rocket scientist, but which one looks broke to you?"

The reason I ask is because we get some of the stupidest people come through our ER.

I just dont fucking get it.

If you woke up and not feeling well and had a fever would you take some tylenol or come straight to the ER? This girl tonight had a fever that started an hour prior to her comeing in. I asked her if she took anything. She said "nope. I wanted yall to see I had a fever."

Or better yet

The mexicans who come in on Medical speak no english and expect me in my own country to learn/know spanish. One lady told me on the translation phone I need to learn spanish. I got pissed and just about said fuck off but nicely informed her where she was and asked her how long she has lived her. 10 years she says. 10 fucking years and I need to learn fucing spanish!!!!!!!! I told her she needs to learn english.

When my dog turned my arm into a chew toy and bandaids wouldn't do.

When the torsion springs on the garage door broke and it landed on my middle finger. That was the fun day I spent 5 hours + in the er, getting chest xrays, ivs, ekg, all kinds of shit. Turns out my blood pressure was seriously high. 196/120 or something.

lol - and there was this one time (few summers ago) I fell off a ladder while painting...I go to the ER, they keep me for awhile after shining flashlights in my eyes and then sent me home.

A few days later when all my fingers were numb I went to a different ER to get checked out because they wouldn't let me back to work without clearance. Turns out, after some MRI kind of shit, I had three herniated disks in my neck and a mild concussion.

Nice work ER #1!!

Took my son in for siezures. The ambulance pissed me off, and it got worse. The ambulance took forever to get to the house, then split me and my wife up...to see if we beat him, I guess. He's one, and has no marks, so that was a really good waste of time...could of did that at the hospital, or questioned her on the way to the hospital, and me when we got there.

Got to the hospital and had to wait for at least an hour in the waiting room, which may not seem long to some, but it's a 1 year old kid, and there is literally 1 other guy in there. I think they detected a hostile attitude from me a bit, cause i was seething. They gave us a little bit of their time, bad info., and no tests for a kid who had his first siezure. We ended up having to go again that night, after I had made a trip down south. Drove myself this time, but the hospital staff was much better. Actually checked for shit that time instead of sending us on our way.

I only go to a hospital if I'm about to die, like the time my appendix was ready to burst, or if I want something x-rayed fast because I think it's broken.

Emergency rooms here are filled with immigrant families bringing their kids in because they have a sniffle. Average wait time for anything is roughly four hours - why waste your time unless you're almost dying? Plus, in my previous experience more often than not the doctor will make a quick diagnosis and then send you home no matter what is going on because they don't want the hospital to pay for tests.

However, our health care is free here. It is nice to be able to just get up and go without even thinking about it if something is wrong.

Why does that make me laugh?

mountain muscle said:

Actually, I think it's part of the problem. If I need an MRI or other expensive test the waiting lists are 6 months to a year. Or I can drive across the border and pay for it and get the test right away. I would be willing to pay for health care if it meant I could get tests done promptly or not wait for eight hours in a hospital if I need something done.

I will go as a real last resort if it's real bad for myself because I don't want to sit there for 4 hours. I will wait until morning to see a doctor. My kids though no question if it seems serious at all I will go in a heartbeat.

Ive gone for bronchitis/pneumonia, pluresy (actually the urgent care center sent me down the street to the ER after examining me), effusion in my right hip joint (called an ambulance for that one; couldnt move), gall bladder attacks, miscarriage. I took my son when he was 5 mos old and woke up middle of the night sounding like a barking dog and wheezing, I thought he was having an asthma attack - turned out to be croup. Also when I fell while I was carrying him to the car and he cracked his head on the pavement and started barfing, also when he was 2, we took him in for dehydration which he was hospitalized for for a few days (they couldnt even get an IV in his poor little collapsed veins). I think that's about it. We use the urgent care a lot for when we're sick and you can't get in to see the GP for a week or so.

These all seem like good reasons to go. I wish yall were the kind of people we saw that actually needed the ER.

Some ER docs wil try to get ya out.

When we since a little atitude from a pt we all get a little angry. Remember we are not perfect and are people too. We dont come to other peoples work and yell at them or tell them how to do thier jobs.

We get yelled at alot because of wait time. Im sorry but a sore throat is important but not an emergncy and will have to wait so please dont yell at me ma;am. I know you are only 18 with 4 kids and I am paying for your viit but pleas have a seat and we will get to you and your FUCKING welfare babies as soon as we can.

Maybe 8 times my entire life.
Ear infection (I was prob 8 yrs old)
Animal Bite (went 3 days later only when the bite became toxic and swollen)
Rest of the time was for unexplained sickness (which I now know is lyme/lupus)

I've never gone for myself. If I think something is seriously fucked with myself I'll go to an immediate care clinic. What a great idea those things are.

I did take my girlfriend to the ER once after her dog scratched the fuck out of her eye - we tried an immediate care place first but they didn't have the necessary equipment to detect if there could be an infection, etc - and the nurse there basically convinced us it was serious enough to go to the ER.

I begrudgingly go when I break bones. Also once when i nearly bled to death. lol

Cut my hand/wrist pretty bad it was yucky. Plus I was drunk so my blood was thin.

I only go to the emergency room when I need stitches.
I never go to the doctor, even when I'm super sick. I'm smart like that.

I cut my thumb and needed stitches. I felt like a retard but all of the doctors I called told me they don't do sutures in their office. Where else was I to go? The last time I went was because I was bleeding out of my rectum. I still don't have a diagnosis on that problem. I do have a colonoscopy scheduled next month. I hate ERs. When I was bleeding out of my ass, they brought in a 6 year old girl that died after being hit by a car getting off the school bus.
How do ER workers keep their sanity? You have a dead child in one room and then you have to forget about it and go to the next room and take care of me with my bloody ass. I'd lose my mind if I had to work in those conditions.

that was like me. First time I saw a DR was in my late 20's (cept for my yearly gynocologist check up since I was 16)

It is hard to not get emotional when someone young comes in a dies because of something they had no control over.

I wish more MDs would suture in the office. It would save us some time in he ER.

Most ER nurses arent sane. lol I a the only sane one in the country. just sayin

The ER system in LA is beyond fucked up.

After you wait 8 hours behind the homeless abusing the system, the illegals and their screaming kids, and the junkies...

you get into ER and kicked out asap to make room for others.

When I went to ER, the ambulance asked if i had health ins. I said I did, they drove an extra 15 mins to a MUCH nicer city and hospital, and I got seen right away. Plus they didn't try to kick me out. They told me 'You got health ins., trust me, you DON'T want to go to that community hospital'. :)

Health Insurance > *

But what do you think fat americans waste their money on in life?

How long have you worked in the ER bro? Seems like you're surprised at this. You get used to it, but I agree that it never sits well and you always ask yourself, "WTF are you coming here for?"

Sucks to see people taking advantage of our EMS system like that (using it for non emergencies). But, I guess we're not so different from Canada or the UK after all huh? People get "free" healthcare in the US all the time.

I can't get enough of your wisdom! You're like an SME (Subject Matter Expert - but you already knew that) no matter the subject! In fact, I think they refer to you as an AME (All Matter Expert)!

Last two times I went were for stitches. He used friggin' glue on it last time, so I think I'll just whip out the superglue and do it myself next time I have a fresh gaping wound. I wonder how one goes about sterilizing glue?

:cow:

As you know I used to work with ER rooms in 4 states putting teams together to take over operations there. I used to have to visit the site every now and then to do referencing and such.

Terrible place. Unless you are actually bleeding or a bone is protruding out of your body, you are in for a wait. Preggies go to the front of the line (understandable)

Here is a good tip, if you take an ambulance to the hospital and they ask you if you can walk in, say NO. If you walk in - you wait. If they wheel you in, you get Stat treatment.

arghhhh. I went to the ER one time in an ambulance when I had to call 911 because I could not move. they rolled me in and set me up in a wheelchair in the waiting area. I sat there alone and crying in pain and i waited for over an hour and ahalf before they even triaged me and signed me in. then i waited another couple hours to go in the back.,. then at least another hour to see a doctor. oh man, by the time my Dad arrived to teh ER, he was pissed I had waited so long and they wouldnt give me any tylenol or anything for the immense pain I was in. So while I waited, my Dad went to the local Walgreen's and bought me some OTC tylenol and gave it to me in the ER. "fuck them" he said "you're in pain. i cant stand to see you in pain like this"

ERs r a joke. come here to LA and youll see how bad it really is. Worst in the world plus I go to one every day. Have to wait behind all kinds of people who are shits in society and I am so much better and deserve attention.

ER for 4 years now. I expect it to happen everyday. And it still pisses me off when dumb asses can call 911 for foot pain and thier spouse or kid is following them in the car. People abuse the system and there is nothing we can do about it because we are soooo worried about getting sued.

I have tried to make this point in many posts about healthcare. People have access to healthcare and they dont "have" to pay for it. People get all kind of free insurance that the others who are working hard are paying for it.

It doesnt matter how long you have ben in i it still pisses everyone off.

This happens in the ER in the US even with good medical coverage?

blueta2 said:

depending on the facility and how busy they are, and how serious your issue is, yea it can happen. When entering the ER waiting room you should check in at triage. You will be asked why you are coming there. If you say something like, "back pain" or "sprained ankle" you'll probably have to wait (depending how busy they are). If someone comes up and says, "chest pain and shortness of breath," they're probably going to get seen right away. The triage nurse (sometimes with the help of the charge nurse) will determine how quickly you get a bed, based on level of acuity.

Unless there were about a dozen people that walked in right before Smurfy, or more acute cases kept coming in before she had a chance to be seen, waiting an hour and a half to be triaged shouldn't have happened. Sounds like someone may have messed up. Maybe the EMT/medic that brought her in didn't alert the triage nurse. Usually they are doing the best they can.

To my knowledge no one ever waited an hour and a half to be triaged at my ER. Waiting up to 4-6 hours to be seen has happened though (after triage of course). But, it is a very busy ER in a large, centrally located hospital.

I have to be honest, and this is not a Can is better than the US comment, but the ER's are much better up here.
The longest I ever waited for Triage was 15 mins. They see you right away.
I have waiting long hours in the ER, but when I was bit by an animals, they saw me w/in 2 hrs and when I had stomach issues, less than 20 mins.

Again, not making this about the country, but I thought in the US, ER was quick?!

It all depends on how busy they are.

Go to a large cities hospital on a FRi. or SAT. evening, and you will wait for hours.

Was in the ER recently for a family member, and we got right in.

Britney Spears and Donald Trump would have to wait even less than 15 mins here.

Healthcare is a commodity like oil or power or water. The constitution does not guarantee 5-star healthcare for everyone. I still don't know why people expect the Government to heal them too? And not want to pay for it either. (Canadian taxes are ludicrous, what's it 15% sales tax now??).

Taxes are different from province to province. In Quebec it's close to 15%.
We do pay high tax but we have low cost housing compared to other large cities. Again, I'm only speaking of my province

ER rooms are truly an entertaining experience. When the weather is horrible, the ER is empty. As soon as the weather clears, it gets packed. The motherfuckers sitting in the ER are comprised of the dregs of society for the most part. The ghetto trash or nonenglish speaking aliens who aren't eligible for insurance. Sure, there are some that are there for true emergencies but they aren't the ones sitting in the waiting room.

If you're well enough to sit in the waiting room, 'YOU'RE NOT SICK ENOUGH TO BE IN THE ER!!!" Plain and simple.

A neighboring county just put up billboards that read, ambulances are for emergencies, not a taxi. The reason is because people who sprained their ankle a month ago are calling 911 and asking for a ride to the hospital.

The reason why it takes people so long to be seen by a doctor is because you have all these fucks who should either wait until Monday or normal operating hours to be seen by a clinic yet they seem to think that the ER is their free ticket to get treated when it's not.

These people not only clog the ER for real emergencies, they make our job that much harder because we have to deal with non-emergencies before real ones. The reason being is that all cases coming from the ER are treated as STAT's so they are on a first come first serve basis.

If you're well enough to drive your filthy poor obese diabetic ass to the ER and sit in the room for 4 hours and not die, then get the fuck out of the ER!!!

speaking of school, in Canada is cost less than 3000$ a yr to go to one of the best universities in North America.
Health care and very low LOW cost top notch education is where a lot of our taxes go

That is horseshit.

When I went in for a gaping wound in my arm, bleeding all over the place, I was asked to fill out forms then waited for almost an hour, while bleeding. Took them almost 30 minutes to even offer me a towel to cover the wound.
The floor was cleaned of my blood before I even got a towel.

You are in for a wait no matter what.

Yep sir. There's NO housing crisis in America. There are no foreclosures anywhere, and people are making money with their homes from coast to coast!

Let me know when you grow out of that mickey mouse "everything is so great!'" phase of life and get back to reality.

And musicians do drugs, drink and get laid. They don't talk about housing markets on websites. So rethink your sad attempts at expressing your anger.

Enjoy your 9-5 slave life. Your boss wants you to hurry up and go to bed so you can go to work 2morrow. So go to bed.

You make me laugh.

I am my own boss. Never have worked 9-5.

Mickey Mouse reality? I have worked 12 hour days for the last 7 years. Now it is on call 24/7. I have no anger to express junior. Too busy.

Let me rephrase for your minute intellect.

Shut your fucking whining, bitch-ass mouth and do something about it.
Life seems to be a problem for you, you should do us all a favor and eat a bullet.

depending on the facility and how busy they are, and how serious your issue is, yea it can happen.

But, it is a very busy ER in a large, centrally located hospital.
i really do think that's what happened. Ive never had to wait like that in an ER before. I didnt even wait that long when I went in with bronchitis/pneumonia but that may also be because I complained of chest pains lol

All ERs are different. Depending on how critical the pts are will determine if you come back. From what I understand it is an EMTALA violation if someone is not triaged in 20 minutes. We sometimes get people back for ABD issues fairly quickly since it can be a number of issues some bad and some not so bad. Our ER does not flow smoothly because there are a lot of nurses that are slow and borderline compotent.
