The "upgrade" was probably for a single reason:
Elite mail is owned by Hushmail. Most software companies stop supporting previous versions of software 12-18 months after it's been replaced. I'd wager a wooden nickle that it's exactly 12 months since hushmail released their latest version.
But to be precise, Hushmail upgraded in an effort to relieve processor loads during encryption. So they went from Blowfish (a nice variable key length/variable block length algorithm) to OpenPGP. Now OpenPGP, while well known and widely used it does not scale well. It uses less processor time, but at greater risk of collision than Blowfish.
The result is a somewhat less secure encryption method in exchange for slightly faster access. But for some reason, the new version is slower than the old one, I still can't get my head around that one....a diet coke to the person who can fill me in on that one.
