Elite at work??--help me

Okay--maybe I'll expand the question. Anyone think it's common for a company to have software that tracks every website hit or do they just use 'websense' to record sites that they have restricted. ????

I am personally responsible for tracking this internet activity at my work. There are about 7000 with web access. Most of the internet tracking software actaully runs on its own server. This is the case because it DOES have the capability to record ALL internet addresses visited by everyone. It can then be configured to block certain URLs - porno, gambling etc. WHen this is activated a custom HTML page will appear when these restricted sites are accessed - a warning page about company policy.

What is logged is the NetBIOS name of the terminal and the IP address. The NetBIOS name makes it easier to track down offenders in a DHCP environment - non-static IP address.

As WeeMan says, it records where you went and for how long. I run paper reports every week and forward them to the corp. big wigs. And yes, we have fired people for internet policy violations - backed by information from this software.

If you are in a large company - just stay off the top of the usage list that can be generated as I mentioned above. Those are the targets of reprimand in most cases.

Hope that helps.
