First you should know that L-Carnitine taken in large doses will strengthen the heart muscle tremendously. If you have a weakened heart muscle due to an infection then L-Carnitine can and will really help you. I know this from first hand experience so please give this a try. I like the liquid, 1000mg per dose version. Try taking 10 to 15 grams per day for a month. As far as the heart muscle goes, CoQ10, as you've already mentioned is excellent. Magnesium (aspartate, taurate or glycinate) and Taurine are also quite good for the heart muscle.
As far as the arteries go, which was going to be the topic of my thread, there is a lot of information coming out now about inflammation, identified by a substance called C-reactive protein, as well as fibrinogen and homocysteine being our real enemies in CV disease. There is also a body of evidence that strongly suggests that a pathogen, or bacteria, which is thought to exist and wreak havoc on the arterial walls is also a huge player, especially in causing the oxidative process that results in calcified plaque. Inflammation, oxidation, and bacterial infection I believe we're going to be hearing a lot more about in the near future as opposed to "high cholesterol" as the real cause for cardiovascular disease and heart attacks.
I've read various protocols from "innovative" doctors around the world who are treating people with this in mind and, for the most part, they are using the following supplements and therapies:
Anti-inflammatories and agents that lower C-reactive protein levels: These of course reduce any inflammation that may exist in your arteries as well as lower C-reactive protein levels. Some that are considered excellent are
FYI (For Your Inflammation, see links below) which is a combination of enzymes, herbs and foods that are known to reduce both inflammation and C-reactive protein levels. Cat's Claw extract is one of these.
Serrapeptase is another powerful anti-inflammatory which is also known to "improve cardiac function" as well as "reduce levels of arterial plaque." Low-dose aspirin is yet another simple and safe means of reducing inflammation. lef.org has a product called
Healthprin which is only 81mg of pure aspirin.
Garlic: JAMA's 9/18/02 issue reported results of a study in which it found that "garlic extract was 2.5 times more effective in inhibiting plaque formation than was HDL-cholesterol." I re-quoted this from LEF's 12/02 issue of their magazine which is not yet on their web-site. As a result of this information Kyolic has come out with a 1000mg "one per day" garlic pill. According to LEF, 1000mg per 1.1 pounds of food eaten per day is recommended.
TMG, B6, Folic Acid: All known to significantly reduce Homocycteine levels.
www.naturalhealthconsult.com/Monographs/tmg.html seems to have a decent product containing all of these.
Vitamin C: "High fibrinogen levels can induce a heart attack via several mechanisms, including increased platelet aggregation, hyper-coagulation and excessive blood thickening. The New England Journal of Medicine studies showed that those with high levels of fibrinogen were more than twice as likely to die of a heart attack." "At
2000 mg a day of Vitamin C, there was a 27% decrease in the platelet aggregation index, a 12% reduction in total cholesterol and a 45% increase in fibrinolysis (fibrinogen breakdown) activity." Lower levels of C did not produce this effect. Quotes taken from LEF's 01/01 issue of their magazine entitled "Inflammation and Heart Disease".
AHCC (Active Hexose Correlate Compound): Researchers at nanobaclabs.com have proven that there exists a pathogen, or bacteria, that exists in the blood and on the arterial walls. It is believed by these researchers, as well as others, that this bacteria could be a big player in causing oxidized cholesterol and, thereby, calcification and plaque as well as inflammation. While a common anti-biotic (tetracycline) is used in conjunction with edta, enzymes and amino acids for treating this, AHCC is an extremely powerful, I believe the most powerful, immune stimulating agent there is. From ahccresearch.com "AHCC will help maintain peak Natural Killer cell function, support enhanced cytokine production, promote optimal T-Cell and macrophage activity," however, there's tons of research studies that can be found on AHCC for all kinds of immune stimulating applications. The stuff is simply amazing. I have first hand experience with this for a respiratory infection that I had last year that nothing would get rid of and AHCC was better than any antibiotic or immune supporting supplement that I used because only it got rid of it. IMO this is the best stuff out there for killing any existing pathogen or bacteria in our bodies.
Aside from that a
full spectrum E and
marine lipid supplement containg EPA/DHA as well as GLA are both excellent.
Chelation therapy is also an option for those who have an advanced degree of plaque formation existing in their arteries. I did a thread on chelation a few weeks back, just do a search if you're interested.
Well, that's it. I imagine there will be plenty of disbelievers and those that simply do not care. That doesn't bother me. I'll only say that if you're interested, do the research and learn for yourself as opposed to just sitting back and listening to everything that the pharmaceutical industry tells you, whether it be through your doctor or a television commercial.
