eating raw oats?

I finally had an epiphany about my trials with oatmeal (it's too gooey and bland!). I remembered that when I was a kid, my mother used to eat raw oats all the time, right out of the canister. I ate them, too and they were okay. So I'm going to try this as a source of fiber and carbs in the morning.

My question is this -- is anyone aware of any digestion problems with eating raw, unsoaked (muesli is raw but soaked) oats? I can imagine that I would have to be sure to drink a lot of water. I'm going to try it anyway, but it would be nice to be forewarned... ;)

I've come to tolerate oatmeal, but just a few months ago I would measure out raw oats, mix pour in a tiny bit of non fat milk, maybe a tablespoon or two and some splenda and eat it like it was a cereal, but with way less milk. Hopefully that makes sense.

Lately though I've grown to like hot oatmeal after a mere 22 years of hating it. I need splenda no matter how I eat it though, sometimes natural peanut butter and sometimes cinnamon.

I hate it with protein powder though, the people that say it tastes like reese's are a bunch of mean evil liars! Okay maybe they aren't quite that bad.

I understand what you're saying about how you used to eat oatmeal. I can't really do that because I don't drink milk - yeah, picky, picky girl. Any cereal I eat, I eat dry.

tee hee!

Oh yea, how much raw oats would you eat in a sitting? 1/2 cup? Did you have any problems with gas or tummyache?

I do this as well, just to save time in the mornings. I also found that I do not feel as full during my workout, which generally occurs about 1-1/2 hours later.

I make mine in the blender, rather than grinding them up before hand. The blender does a decent job of making the oats drinkable.

That's how I do it, when I do it. Throw everything in a cup and use the hand blender.

Eating raw oats hurts my teeth  seriously!

If you are getting the 1-minute Quick Oats, try the regular slow-cooking kind (I cook it 2.5 minutes in the microwave, not exactly slow in my book!). But, I find that the slow-cooking kind are quite a bit less mushy.

To me, there is a significant difference in the taste! I LOVE it, I prepare it with water and I don't add any sweetner.

Give it a try :)

Have you tried Reese's Oatmeal?

Don't toy with me, woman! ;)

Are you talking about the protein powder + oatmeal concoction?

No... It just didn't sound tasty to me. Adding something unappetizing to something else unappetizing!!!

Okay, I'll grind the oats before eating them or adding them to something.

Another oatmeal thing I do is cook with less water for a shorter amount of time. I'd give you the ratios, but I just eyeball it. I hate the gooey globby runny stuff.

Also I've mixed it with cottage cheese, which is okay, but I'd rather use black beans for that, since that actually tastes good.

I love munching raw oats! Ha ha - Glad to know that I'm not alone.

When I eat them cooked, I eat a more finely ground kind that I get at my local organic grocery store. I can't eat that kind raw. The Quaker kind (which are larger) I don't like cooked, but love raw. I've eaten it mixed with raisins too.

Makedah - I'm not fond of the Reese's oatmeal either - just don't like the choclate protein powder flavor any other way but with milk. I don't think it's too bad though.

I tried eating oatmeal with choc. protein powder. Do you just add a scoop of protein after the oatmeals cooked? That's what I did- it looked like doggy throw-up- yuck.

Wannbe - I'm with you. It does look like doggy throw up. My BF eats it every morning. BLECH. I keep trying to eat oatmeal but hate it - gooey and clumpy. Activate my gag reflex as soon as I put it in my mouth - it's like my throat closes up and I can't make myself swallow it. Haven't tried it in months so maybe I should attempt it again.

I think I could eat it uncooked - maybe in yogurt? Which leads to a question - the couple times a week I eat yogurt I mix in 1 tbsp grape nuts. Is that any better/worse then adding uncooked oats?

You mean add the oats if not trying to lose fat? And conversely, if trying to lose fat don't add the oats?

Point is, I'd love to lose some fat 'cause I got enough to lose. But am really trying to add more muscle without gaining more fat, and maybe losing a little in the process. Am occasionally eating 6oz FF yogurt + 1 tbsp grape nuts on higher carb days (2-3 times a week).

I do limit it to higher carb days or higher activity days because of the high sugar, processed simple carb. Maybe I'll try the ground up oats in my morning protein shake then for normal days.

Why can't yogurt be cutting food? :bawling: I like it.... oh well *sigh*

If you don't like oats, blend them with cottage cheese and egg whites and cinnamon and splenda to make oatmeal pancakes (see Cut's thread on the muscle food board). I could live on those they're so good. Actually, I DO live on them, ha ha.

And this weekend I'm going to try using chick peas instead of oatmeal in that recipe to see how they turn out - maybe without the splenda and cinnamon. I suppose any legume would do.

Have you tried oat bran? It's not as gooey as oatmeal. And full of even MORE fibre :)

Thanks for the thoughts Steel - I'll definately keep them in mind. I do hate oatmeal.... oat bran is a thought. More fiber is always good IMO, I don't get enough.
