They have been that way for a while... a country doesnt just explode and get 1.3 billion people. Although, China does have the fastest growing economy. It is starting to worry more people recently. Their dollar is underrvalued.

Also, most of the US Trade deficit is kept with China because they are capable of producing goods at a lower cost, thus they have the comparative advantage. They are becoming very powerful.

If aliens had come to the planet in the first millenia and had to judge which country/region would end ruling the world itd have been hands down China b/c of their advancedments.
The sun is setting on the Japanese economy and its population is aging alarmingly, the number of retirees drawing pension will soon rise to 35%.
This is an issue that will affect the US as well and thats why social security needs to be reformed.
Its alarming that many of the western countries have negative population growth with many people choosing not to have children. This will invariably play out to loss of national identity as countries will have such an influx of immigrants to fill labor needs in the next fifty years. India as well has a billion people or so and many jobs are being outsourced to them.
