im going to get dsl at home, my home puter does not have a hook up for dsl, piece of shit gateway about 5 yrs old, hammy is not pleased with this, now i can get my hands on a dsl modem but it doesnt come with any software, can i install this into my home computer and will my puter recognize the dsl modem or do i need to have a disk to install it?

You just need a nic card. the 10/100 lan card. It should be built in even if it is five years old.

Who makes the modem? You should be able to go the manufactorer's website, type in the model number and download the drivers you need to install it.

back up. along with this dsl modem, you know u need a dsl line/connection to be set up by the phone company right (thhey usually charge about 40-80 @ month)??

What model PC do you have. And did you arrange for the line through your phone co.?

his pc is a ME, thats all i know. Does he have to call the phone company and get them to access it or something?
hes going to get verizon and when he ordered it online, they didnt say anything about getting permisson from the phone company......does he have to?

i just looked at a picture of that, that is what i am calling the dsl modem(the ethernet card)(i am puter illiterate so i dont know what you call stuff), i do not have one in my puter, that is what i am talking about that i can have but i dont have any software with it, would i need to have the software to install it.

i am guessing i should just go to best buy and buy a new ethernet card for 20 bucks huh, instead of using this one i have (i am taking it off of a puter that doesnt work anymore)

The NIC card will have a Ethernet port.
It's like your phone jack but bigger.
yes this is what i do not have on my home puter but i can get one without any software with it, thats my basic question, will my puter recognize it without having any software with it

yes. phone co has to run a special dsl line into the hammy cage (i think like 40-80 @ month depending on speed). they would also provide the modem/software. i think some can hook to USB post too, so u might not need the NIC. they usually come out and set it all up for you.

are you getting Verizon DSL? if so i wouldnt recommend it.

I work for Verizon. Its not the best service in the world. Its not that fast, its pretty expensive, and there appears to be alot of problems i get day to day.

get a new one... the 20 bucks will be more than be worth the hassle youll encounter trying to download software etc...

yes its verizon, its what i have at work and never have any problems

im just telling you the horror stories i hear. Plus. Compared to cable. The speeds are not even close for the compared price.

You order the new line yet? and did they talk to you about the service being contractual?

order a new line? its a 1yr contract

Well, if you don't have a NIC, you'll need one. It should have a driver disk with it. Shutoff your pc, install the card, and boot it back up. It should tell you windows has found new hardware. That's where you'll need the disk with the drivers on it. It should come with instructions too.

so i need to buy a new one then right since this used one doesnt have any software with it?

If you have one already, you should be able to find software for it. What kind is it? It should be on there somewhere. Linksys, Realtek, Netgear, Intel? Got any part numbers?

i havent pulled it out of the other puter yet, are you saying there is software online for it?

Usually you can find drivers online, yes. That's what I wanted to know the model, I was going to look for you.
