DSL far inferior to cable

I knew cable was better but I didn't know how much better. I moved to someplace that only had DSL as an option. It's not even half as fast. Well I'll know next time to check to see see if cable internet is available before I move someplace. I'm just gonna have to suck it up for 6 month. I really feel for you poor bastards on dial up.

How slow IS your DSL?

Mine's pretty reasonable, at 1.5M (rated) down, 128K up. That might not be T1 territory, but it's good enough that I don't feel restricted by it.

The problem with cable is that the more people that get hooked up to it the slower it will go. Think of cable as a big water pipe bringing water to everyones home. The more people that hook up to that pipe, the less water (i.e. bandwidth) you are going to get. With DSL, everyone has there own direct pipe to the source.

cable is better?

ha! Wait til your cable goes down. Get ready to wait 7+ days for them to fix it. With DSL, they fix it the next day.

^relative to isp... but to end the debate... coax lines have a much higher data xfer capability than phone lines... so yes cable is "faster" than dsl... u have to factor the horrid upstream speed though as well. My cable in oc (adelphia) is faster than my t1 at work for downstream stuff.

My DSL shows 1.1mb down and 217kb up on DSL Reports. My cable was 3.3mb down and 250kb up. The cable really was rocking on the downloads it seemed T1 or better. The uploads are about the same. I never had my cable go down for more than a few minutes but maybe I was lucky.

i've had cable go out for a few hours, but no longer than that. they ran a dedicated cable line into my house when i got it, so it's a full strength signal, unlike a lot of people i've talked to where their regular line is split when it enters the house, one line to the TVs and the other to the computer.

the speeds you guys are posting...damn. makes me want to upgrade to the 1200up/down plan from my cable company. i currently have the 800down/600up speeds, but since i don't do massive downloads often (ie - gave up on KaZaA cause of all the legal BS), i guess i'll stick with what i've got.

See when you are using usenet you want the fast download possible. I had a commercial news server when I had cable but I think I am gonna dump then for now because my current ISPs news server isn't bad and I can't download as fast as I could before so no point in me paying the extra $15 a month for now.

Inferior ? Lol.. I get around 2800 and 3200 kb/s with my home DSl...

Hell 3mbps DSL is better than cable IMO. lol. Back when cable and DSL were both 1.5mb I thought DSL was better but there isn't any 3mbps DSL around here unfortunately. At equal speeds I'd take DSL but like I said I can't get it that fast so cable blows DSL away at least here.

I have had both cable and dsl in my area. (adelphia cable, verizon dsl), and Cable is MUCH better and faster. My downloads are upwards of 10x faster. Night time with cable gives insanely fast downloads in my area.

I totally agree. After comparing the 2, well Comcast cable versus Bellsouth DSL my DSL runs a little bit slower than cable during cables peak hours. Later at night cable gets much fast while DSL is the same at all times.

I only download at night for the most part so cable is beneficial to me. As far as page loads and day to day internet use, the difference between dsl and cable is unnoticeable.

DSL speed is subsyantially impacted by how far you are from the DSL box. My DSL box is only a few blocks away and my speed is usually smokin fast.
