Drop Sets...

What are some of the benefits of drop sets and how should these be incorporated in your routine...is this more of a "leaning out" protocol or can this be done while trying to add mass?

Well, you're able to increase muscle exhaustion w/ them, but you sacrifice intensity (%1RM). If you believe muscle exhaustion leads to hypertrophy (and I think it probably does to some extent), then drop sets help w/ hypertrophy. I don't think they'll help w/ max strength though due to the reduced intensity.

They can be utilized in an effective manner but the way most people in the gym use them is complete garbage. I believe HST takes advantage of them in the last week of their program and it is usually considered the toughest week (but maybe funnest too).

Drop sets can be quite taxing on the CNS and do not offer a lot in the way of load/volume so if you use them, they should be incorporated into some kind of pre-laid out plan.

I will often use drop sets at a time when I can't fit in a full length workout. I also use them if I've hit a plateau with a certain muscle group to give them a shock.

I don't think they would be the optimal way to go to gain mass, though. They seem to work good for those guys who coem in at 7:30 on Friday nights to pump up their bi's before they hit the clubs.

There is no shock thing as shocking a muscle. Unless of course you go and hook yourself up to a tesla coil.

My preferences lean toward TENS units. But, hey, to each his own...
