Drinking (alcohol)

How bad is it for training? I like to drink ALOT on the weekends, normally on the Friday and Saturday I will be very drunk. Cant help it, I just love a drink (And some more) How is this effecting my gains? Would cutting it down to just getting lashed once a week be acceptable

In my personal experience i have found that alcohol kills my gains, kills my strength and kills my motivation. Also when i was trying to lose bodyfat it hindered this too. Ive read plenty of articles about its detremental effects on muscle growth and im pretty sure there has been some threads about it on here too.

I only really drink now on rare occasions and i feel all the better for it.

Dude, alcohol is horrible for anybody trying to gain size or strength. Your body can't metabolize anything but the alcohol for the period it is in your body. That could be 24+ hrs.

I am not very well informed in this area, there are others here who know the details.

However, I can sympathize with you- I am a college student, and well, I like to drink. the best advice I can give you is use in moderation and work out your schedules (lifting and partying- I usually try to only drink if tomorrow is an offday) so that you minimize losses caused by alcohol.

You just have to figure out what you want more.

Its either a hangover and an empty wallet....Or some serious muscle.

It took me along time to realize this, but there are better things to do then get loaded every weekend.

jl - couldn't agree more. empty wallet+wicked hangover+weak<<<GYM+gains.

Took me 8+ years to grow up. Now I have my priorities straight and all is nice.

i sympathize here. i been taking gear and lifting like crazy and eating and staying in my apartment all day and all weekend and never go out because i will get laughed at if i dont drink. and when i do go out i get girls looking at me and everything but because i have no alcohol in me i cant approach them because i dont have the balls. its a double edged sword. the way i see it is: ill look good but never have a girl, or ill drink and get weaker and chubbier and not have a girl. i guess id rather not drink in the end. id rather just get high to escape every once in a while because staying in 24/7 because of eating and lifting gets truly depressing after a while (been like this for around 3 years now for me).

If you cant approach a girl when your sober there is probably some self-esteem issues going on.

Your scared to get laughed at for not drinking??? I hope your not serious.

Seriously, go hang with your friends sober while they're drunk and see how stupid they act.

Im not knocking drinking becuase I used to drink alot and still do occasionaly.

I was literally a drinking machine for years and lifted like a machine too, 5 days a week minimum at the gym. I was a decent size (6' 210lbs.) but never truly big in my mind. I got married, had a kid, and then drinking wasn't my priority any more and it dropped off considerably and before I knew it I am sitting at around 240 doing absolutely nothing different than I had before except the booze. Now I am not hung over any more during my workouts, I eat a ton better, and my body isn't spending precious resources ridding itself of booze, but instead building muscle.

on all but taking gear, i can feel you here. when i go out, i drink. haven't been going out, and it's rough sitting at home all the time. real rough, considering i used to always be out. i've been getting better, but it's been making my motivation come and go.

avoid the booze, you will see sometime in the future that it wasn't worth it in the long run, and you're just dumbing yourself down. you'll feel A LOT better if you cut the crap and focus on your goals. suprisingly, after a few times going out with the same guys that you booze it up with, they'll realize you're serious about what you're trying to do, and will lay off and say "let him do his thing"

booze will only hurt.

look at cubuff27, drank for years, and when the booze lost priority, he realized the benifits of not drinking.

I agree that if your trying to gain in size and strength than you have to eliminate the booze. When I first started lifting heavy and trying to put on size I stopped drinking all together. My trining partner and I made a pact that both of us as a team wouldn't drink for a certain period of time. It worked. If you do drink just remember just beacause it's not a solid food you're still consuming a huge amount of cals. LOL!

By the way, for anybody under 25, I just read a research paper ( I don't remember the title, I need to dig it up), that binge drinkers under 25 severely affect their brain's growth and memory.

I, for one, can admit this is true. I thought it was just the effects of all the pot I smoked ~5 years ago.. but with all the binges and blackouts I have, I say it definately is true.

I am not dumber, but as an engineering student in my senior year, I definately am not as sharp as I was freshman year.

Just something to keep in mind for all the young people out there.

i agree with your post thanks man.

Going out and having a beer or two with the guys one night a week is not going to hinder you gains much at all. As long as you eat eat before and after that little alcohol consumption and go balls out in the gym, you should be fine. I also drink plenty of water before and after too. I probably had 2 bottles before I went to bed last night after I had a nice glass of Stag on tap. Enjoy it with the friends but don't abuse it. You don't have to get sloshed to have a good time.

very good advice, though if it ends up with you binge drinking, it's likely to be avoided altogether. i for one am not the type that can only have a drink and be fine. i can, but 98% of the time i don't, and end up going buck wild, so i am one that has to avoid it altogether, for it's easier to control that way.

I read in a health magazine that alcohol reduces testosterone production for up to four days after consuming. After reading this, I've gone out of my way to reduce or eliminate my alcohol consumption. When I do drink, I try to keep it to just a couple of beers and then switch to water.

IMHO it's all about moderation. You guys must drink a shitload (and get shitfaced) if it really hinders your gains that much. 2 or 3 glasses of scotch, light rocks, or a couple glasses of vino gets me nice and toasty. I drink maybe once or twice a week (sometimes I keep a bottle handy for a little nightcap during the week) and my cutting cycle has gone well thus far. I stick to hard liquor and red wine to keep the consumption to a minimum. Haven't touched a beer for a very long time.

Well, it's Friday night and I'm off to the bars! :p
