doubt syringe filter

hi,

when I do not use the vacuum filter system, I use sterile syringe filter.

my doubt is:

Benzyl alcohol is already getting a sterile solution correct? I use a syringe filter 0.22 not sterile? only to filter the solution? The final will be sterile too?


I use 3 ba% 15% bb
this recipe works very well.

3% BA will do my same sterile solution not using a sterile filter?

a friend said yes. but not sure?

Your friend is not giving you good advice.

When you homebrew you have to filter the finished product. The filter will flitter out things the eye cant see and things it can like hair of dust. The ba is need to kill germs and bacteria that may find there way into the batch and it keeps the finished product clean from things that might grow in the batch.

I've got both vacuum and push cup filters so you don't have a sore thumb from filtering. The nice feature of both of these is you can wipe down the cups with isopropyl alcohol to sterilize them yourself for piece of mind. I've always been told the actual filter need not be individually sealed and sterile because of the process of a liquid being passed through the layers of filter paper..by the time it exits the filter, its been processed sufficiently. One thought to keep in mind is adding alcohol post filtering, because some filter membranes are sensitive to breakdown which will occur because of the alcohol. ...meaning the alcohol might eat up the filter. We have our filters on sale right now..basically the same price as a syringe filter for the push cup filter which does up to 50-75mL per use.

Its true that the only way to get out invisible hairs and fuzz is with a filter. A syringe filter will take care of little particulate impurities by "straining" it. BA is an alcohol and we all know alcohol makes things sterile. Its a two front attack. The one thing to remember is BA does degrade a filter so if it was my project, I'd syringe filter and then lastly add a few drops of ba for good measure.
