E Coli Showing Up In Bagged Lettuce

If you eat lettuce in a bag, there is some startling news that will have you thinking twice before making your salad.

"Who would think that you could eat lettuce and almost die?" asked Lori Olson, of Minneapolis.

After eating a pre-washed Dole Salad last fall, Olson's daughter had kidney failure.

The Centers for Disease Control tracked the lettuce and Dole Foods recalled 250,000 bags, but not before 25 other people got very sick in three states.

While the outbreak was unusual, the Food and Drug Administration said the problem is growing. There have been at least 19 outbreaks since 1995 -- including brands other than Dole. Also, 425 people have become seriously ill and two have died from e-Coli poisoning.

"It can debilitate, it can kill, even a few cases is too much for us," said Dr. Robert Brackett, director of the Center for Food Safety for the FDA.

The government is rushing to figure out how the E coli contaminates the lettuce. It could come from animal or bird droppings, a new process where lettuce is cored in the field, workers, fertilizer or flooding. In fact, a sample from a creek bed near a lettuce field tested positive for E coli.

Dole Foods declined to comment on its outbreak because of pending lawsuits, but said, "Food safety always has and will be our top priority."

The industry said that it is not the lettuce but the bags that become contaminated. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that is preposterous.

In the meantime, keep the lettuce refrigerated and pay attention to expiration dates because E coli grows quickly. Even though the bag of lettuce says the lettuce is pre-washed, wash it again, just like you used to do with regular lettuce.

there was a study last year that showed lettuce picks up ecoli from the water and stores it internally; so that even when washed, it's still contaminated.

i like the bagged stuff too, but it can go slimy suspiciously quickly; apparently it's in the bag for up to 2 weeks before it hits the shelves

Yeah I always grab from the very back to get the latest exp date. Sometimes it's in 4 days or something. I usually buy 1 bag a week and use it on sammiches
