I have a good friend that went to Thailand/Laos two years ago. She mentioned to me that all the younger people were talking about rolling and raving and such.

AFAIK Thailand will execute heroin and cocaine dealers. But amphetamines are not as stiffly punished, probably coz they are legal in nearby Indonesia, or used to be, plus all the truck drivers in SE Asia use them.

Actually, not to be a know it all, but the drug the authorities here are most concerned about IS speed, aka 'yaa baa.' It is very very much cracked down upon (automatic 5 year prison term for possession of minor quantity in Phuket province), more so than ecstasy, which is nowhere near as prevalent (too expensive). Cheap speed from Burma is what most of the kids are doing at the clubs. Cocaine is an import and fairly rare (also expensive). Heroin is around but at this point not much domestic production, unless for export. Pretty much a hardcore 'derelict' drug and not something with the broad consumer appeal of speed (thus, not so profitable).

Speed started out with truck drivers and uni students, exploded in the club/ghetto scene when ecstasy came to Thailand but was too expensive/hard to make. Burmese Army lets the drug labs operate on the border in exchange for kickbacks and keeping the peace (most are run by militant ethnic minorities).

ps: Raves in Thailand are basically just shows put on by Thais for foreign tourists and their bargirl consorts down in the islands. Regular Thais go clubbing or do karaoke. There is no Thai rave culture, per se.
