Domestic Violence

I live in an upscale apt complex but the majority of the people here are college students. That's not really relative, I just felt like sharing it. The past month or so the guy and girl (i believe they're dating) constantly fight. I'm one of those people that have a terrible time getting sleep so when I do manage to get some good sleep I value it. About 5 times this past month I've been woken up to the sound of, "Fuck this, fuck that, fuck you, blah blah blah." This is all coming from the guy, and it's ALWAYS right around 3 AM. I suspect he's drunk at this time. The girl never yells back, but the guy constantly screams at her. It annoys the hell out of me for 2 reasons. 1) I need my sleep. 2) you shouldn't treat your gf like that no matter what. (i hate girls probably more than frackal but i would never pull shit like this headcase does).

So last night I wake up at about 4 AM to the same old shit and it's really pissing me off this time because I had just fallen asleep about an hour preceding their verbal argument. I hear his usual "fuck you fuck this" slander and lay there staring at the ceiling wondering if this chick is hot. All of a sudden I hear somethign hit the wall real hard and the guy yell, "How's that fuckin feel?" so obviously he shoved her. The girl says nothing, no retaliation whatsoever but the guy keeps on yelling so finally I pick up the phone to call the police. Then I realized that's not a good idea because they'd probably want to chat with me and my apt looks and smells like the inside of a Volkswagen bus at Woodstock if you know what I mean. Anyways, I ended up bouncing my basketball against the wall as hard as I could for a minute or two and the guy finally shutup.

Obviously this is going to happen again and I feel bad for the girl so what should I do? Can you call the cops and report it anonymously or will they want to speak with me? The last thing I need is a pissed off psycho neighbor.

Maybe talk to the girl when no one else is around..See if she is in over her head.

Or if you think he is hurting her... Go down the street to a pay phone and call the cops. You don't have to leave your name.

:)

Talking to the girl = a bad idea. You don't know this guy, or anything about him, and you don't know anything about their relationship. She probably LOVES him, as stupid as that sounds, and she'll tell him and he'll get pissed at you and might do something stupid.

Just go down the street to a pay phone and call the cops, or do it from a cell phone and say you were just passing by.

Call the police.

How would you feel if that was your sister and somebody knew something was going on but was afraid to get her help?:(

I disagree... Someone talking to me probably saved my life.

Just use your gut, every situation is different. Call the cops.

Next time they fight I would go knock on there door and tell him you can hear everything that is going on and if the shit dont stop you are going to call the cops. If the chick is hot just ask her what she is doing with an asshole like him. YOu might want to hid a club somewhere near by incase you need it.

its not your business if they argue. but it is if you can HEAR them through your bedroom wall at 4am. that is just bullshit. I would confront them, and if that doesn't help, then call the cops. what about reporting them to the landlord? what would result form that?

Shove an anonymous letter under their door saying that you can hear everything that goes on when they argue and that if it doesn't stop you'll call the cops. The guy really deserves to have his ass kicked for hitting a girl. If you push *67 before you dial, that blocks caller id. I don't know if that would work calling 911 however.

I don't think that would work. If I were an abuser, I'd either blame her ("Now look what you've done!" even if it's MY fault), or I start making plans to relocate somewhere where I could get away with it.

I'd suggest calling the police on each occasino, even though she likely will not press charges at first. Each subsequent call establishes a report on their situation that can later be used to protect her in court, if necessary, by prioving she's not just making up claims against him.

And screw the cop who gripes, "I'm tired of coming out to this same house over and over." So? It's your job, man.

If you really think you have the right advice to help her, and you're willing to be involved, you might consider telling her in private something as simple as, "You're going through some rough times, from what I can hear from my place. If you'd ever like to talk, I'll keep your privacy."

Contact your local DV shelter if you want someone to help you get more advice on what to say and suggest.

I would be sorely tempted to pull a Dr. Luca on his punk ass and beat him. I honestly believe that everyone of us has the responsibility to take action in situations like this. Personally I would just knock on the door and size the situation up. At the very least I would let them know I can hear everything and to please keep it down.

That was from a discussion on self defence.
Someone saw a girl being hit by her friend.
He helped the girl and subsequently was fighting with the guy and hit him in the face breaking his nose.
Lateron when the police arrived tha girl swore that he did start the fight and he had a charge for hurting that guy.
What i want to say... don´t use force, call the police if you have to, but don´t fight.
It can have a very unsuspected turn and get you into trouble.

That is the weird think about domestic violence. Many times the girl who is abused will take the side of the abuser when he could get in trouble.

its every guys nastural instinct to defend a woman in trouble.....

dont rush in and do it every time, else you may land yourself in trouble like this.

dont confide in her and ask her if she needs help, the fact she is STILL with this guy shows shes obviously got some problems (probably caused by the guy so who knows), liike someone else said on here she may let it slip, and then you're the next problem for ths guy.

CALL the police from a payphone, tell them you wanna report it anonymously and that some asshole is beating his woman and its really aggrevating you listening to her getting beaten. and keep doing it until something is done

have any other residents 'mentioned it'?

dont you think you should stop being selfish for one second and try and help this girl out or are you that stuck on your weed that you can t smoke it somewhere else. so incase you hear something like that again you can call the cops and not have to worry about your place smelling like sh!t?

wouldn't you want someone to help you out if you were unfortunate enought to be in that situation?

She doesn´t want to leave him at is seems.
Why should one get himself into trouble for someone who doesn´t even try to help himself and who is not a friend?

most women who suffer from domestic abuse are afraid to leave and need sometimes need a "straw to break the camels back" speak

and besides its a nice somewhat caring thing to do. It says something about a person when they're not afraid to give someone else a helping hand.

a) how do you know she doesn't wan t help?
b) and yes, if shes afraid for self, she cant handle a telephone

Call the cops! Call the cops!

I hope this girl clears her head soon....She's going down the WRONG path in life with this jerk she "loves". Maybe a visit from the cops will wake her ass up to what is in store for her future with him!

By the way, something stuck in my mind with your story. You had wondered if the chick was hot? Allow me to share this scenario:

***I donate my services a few times oer month at a local women's shelter for abused women with children****

Young mother and two kids come into Bethany House(shelter for abused women with kids). The lady appears to be 27 years old, kids approx 6 and 8. She carries a photo album with her along with the children's clothing and a few toys stuffed in a box.

My little girl often comes with me to the shelter. My little girl becomes "pals" with this woman's lil gal. They play and have fun while I do the books . Brianna, my lil one, brings the photo album to me one day. This woman's lil girl is following behind Bri with her brother. The lil girl says to me " Look how pretty my mommy once was..." I felt sorry for the once pretty woman, but I felt MORE sorry for the two kids who were scarred deeper from the abuse they saw in their lives!

I also wonder how the hell did her hubby get away with beating her to a pulp and NO one saying ANYTHING!Trust me, this woman suffered MORE than one broken nose in her liftetime! Perhaps she was the type of woman who had neighbors who NEVER made a call ....Took a lot of year's of abuse before she got the courage to leave!

jbauer said:

She is still with him. She didn´t say help me to anyone. She didn´t call the police or a lawyer.
If she wanted to get rid of that guy she would just do something about it.

Norman, not everyone is like you. Not every one is pro-active. This lady might have been raised to be submissive and compliant. Maybe her dad beat her mom so that's how she thinks it's supposed to be. Maybe her man has psychologically torn her down to the point that she really believes all the bad shit he says about her. Love is a powerful drug, and if she loved him it's not absurd to think he has her under his spell. An evil spell.

Maybe she knows he is very sly and can make the cops not believe her.

Maybe she's afraid that if he goes to jail, it won't be for long and as soon as he gets out he will come around and REALLY hurt her.

Don't be a dimwad, Norman. There are LOTS of reasons why she doesn't do anything and you are no one to judge. The point is it is WRONG for a man to abuse a woman and it is WRONG to not do anything if one knows it is happening.

I dont condone domestic violence at all.. but I can understand where it comes from... Some people get their fucking jollies out of pushing people to the edge... I know it doesnt make it right, but some still ask for it... and I know it turn mr hand, into mr fist...

Of course is beating other people a bad thing.
Sticking with someone who beats you is a stupid thing.

If she has injuries from the beatings he will have a hard time telling the cops that she is to blame.

Thx for the dimwad btw. , people who need verbal violence are just a bit better than people who use physical violence.
I guess i did never have to use violence myself because i don´t spend my time with people like that.

You're right. You are obviously superior to me since you do not engage in "verbal violence" as you so aptly put it. Why did I bother sticking to my pathetic morals? I should have realized it was her fault all along for being stupid. Just like it is a retarded person's fault he is retarded. Now that I know this I can go on wiht my life and never worry about people to whom bad things are happening. No need to get bogged down by their negative energy. Will you find it in your heart to forgive me, Norman?

If she wanted to get rid of that guy she would just do something about it.

That is the same logic that the abuser uses - "She must like it otherwise she would leave me". She may love the guy but she damn well doesn't like what he turns in to.

I am sure this thread is being read by men who abuse their partner. I want to talk to you for just a bit. Some of you are just mean drunks but there are just as many if not more who aren't. You are good men who cannot control your anger or you cannot deal with not being in control. I am sure that you love her. I am sure that you feel horrible about the things that you do to her. There us help available to you but first you have to be honest about what is really going on. Get yourself to a good therapist. Ultimately there is no good end to this, she will eventually leave you or you will injure her so badly that you end up spending more than one night in jail. Either way in the end you will lose. She can't ever completely love you as it is not possible to truly love someone that you are afraid of. Anything that she feels for you now will be replaced with contempt at some point. If you are a good person and you care at all about doing the right thing then admit that you need help, you can't stop this behavior on your own no matter how hard you try. You may go thru many counselors before you find one that can help you but in the end it will be worth it.

If anyone thinks victims like it, or are playing games with their pain, that's bullshit used to justify not having to do anything more than judge the victim.

i think norman bates was just saying that you may try and talk to her, or help her on a very personal level and because she doesnt really know whats going on in her head she'll tell her boyfrind everything. given her boyfriend is happy to beat her im sure he'll have no problem making your immeadiate life a misery....

he;s just saying dont get personally involved as if you trust her she may break it by telling him, and that the poster should just call the cops and tell them whats going on, NOT ignore her

I did not read any replies so I apologize if my answer has already been said. Anyway, this is my personal reaction, I tolerate no disrespect, especially along these lines of a man yelling/shoving a woman, thats just plain punk ass antics, I would go up there personally and let him know he is a true bitch, maybe even shove him around and place his face in the toilet and give him a swirlie, then say "if it happens again I'm calling the police".. peace

People like what? You , and maybe other's, are clueless if you think that these abusers are un-educated, bums or " white trash" men.

I see ALLLLLLL types of women , from allllll classes up in the shelter I offer my services too.

Sorry, this issue has no class boundries...It happens to the "best", "respected" families too.

Since people obviously don´t bother to read what i wrote i´ll just repeat it here.

I keep away from people who are violent. It has nothing to do with class, you are right. As soon as people show that they are violent i start keeping away from them.

That is the same logic that the abuser uses - "She must like it otherwise she would leave me". She may love the guy but she damn well doesn't like what he turns in to.
I don´t think that she likes it, but it is her responsibility to care for herself. Maybe she wants to settle it by herself and she doesn´t want other people to get involved? Just rushing over and beating the other guy is a bad idea.

Will you find it in your heart to forgive me, Norman?
I keep away from violent and insulting people, so no. :nopity:

Just like it is a retarded person's fault he is retarded.
Bad example, one thing happens due to genetics, the other thing is a decision that she made.

Why did I bother sticking to my pathetic morals?
Does your morale include start insulting other people because they don´t agree with you, too?

Now that I know this I can go on wiht my life and never worry about people to whom bad things are happening
As if i said that...

Norman,
I dont think you are understanding the basic point, women who are beaten do not have the will power on thier own to leave a man who hits them. They get it into their head that they are at fault and that in some way is thier punishment, they dont consider it abuse. Usually these women have no self esteem and fear that no one else will love them. These women generally have just as many mental problems as the men who hit them.

Calling the cops could give her the initial push to give her strength to press charges and leave him. Where just talking to her........ she will probably lie and say something to the effect of "oh i just tripped" or "i did something wrong and i deserved it" if they actually admit what went on.

As for your statement " its her responsibility to take care of herself"......... Would you leave a child alone to take care of himself? NO thats considered child abuse. These women are like children. THEY NEED HELP. that is why there are womens shelters for those who do get the strenght and courage to leave. Mostly the strength and courage comes from someone else, esp. when they know the police are there for them if they need it.

Norman, I'm not about bashing YOU!Trust me. ..I bashed one guy on here once and felt like shit about it after. I still feel bad about that day cuz it's NOT my nature to be nasty on here or in real life!

My point is that YOU may NOT know if the people you hang with are violent in nature or not. Abusers can be VERY tricky in masking the abuse they dole out to a family member.

There is a respected doctor at a local hospital here in NW Ohio who once beat the shit out of his wife when the mood struck him.He did" body shots" to her as the abuse would NOT be seen on her in the outside world!

I guess my point is...YOU NEVER KNOW WHO COULD BE AN ABUSER BY LOOKING AT THEM OR DEALING WITH THEM ON A DAILY BASIS!

No hate towards you...just wanted to point out YOU may be in the company of an abuser and NOT know it. This is a subject close too my heart and IS very important!

Peace to you sweetie...I hope that I did not come across AS TOO rude.

Just a thought...how do you know that their not
just having rough sex? I have dated girls that
liked to be cursed at and slammed around. That's
the only way they could orgasm! Not my cup of tea
so I moved on, but it is a possibility!

Good that we agree on calling the cops.

If they really have that low self esteem maybe you should try to convince them to call the cops by themselves, that would probably help them more than going over and beating their bf.
Or they should see a psychiatrist.

I think you should not compare a mature woman to a child.
It´s a good thing that there are these shelters, because when someone finally decides that she doesn´t deserve to be beaten she should get the opportunity to help herself.

I don´t think it´s a valid demand on someone to get into trouble, like the hash problem in the beginning, to help someone who could easily help herself. And without knowing if she wants help at all.

Any male i hang around with doesn´t use violence ever to solve problems or beats people that are weaker than himself.
They are all pacifists and don´t show violent behaviour.

Any woman i hang around with wouldn´t take shit like that.

Of course i don´t know for sure if i have violent friends, but the chances are really low.

Norman, I now see that you are a staunch, rugged individualist. "God helps those who help themselves," huh? All I can say is, it takes all kinds. I'll agree to disagree.

However, if you were a mechanic and saw a motorist stranded by the side of the road, and you decided to help her, would you a) give her some tools and drive off or b) fix the car for her?

(I know, you are probably not a mechanic, and you would not necessarily decide to help her, but IF this hypothetical situation were true)

JC

If it had no bad consequences for me i would help her/him.
If i was in a hurry for something important to me i´d probably stop and ask her if she/he needs a telephone.

The first post includes that if he helped the girl he could get into trouble with the police.
I wouldn´t go that far to risk myself in situation where she could easily help herself. An anonymous phone call wouldn´t be trouble, so that would be ok.
Going over and punching her bf would be trouble with the police and result in more trouble with the cannabis.

Another difference to the analogy you provided is that the person in your story is not able to help her/himself for some reason.
In the original post she could easily help herself.

Actually you're kind of missing the point. What we are saying here is that due to either her raising or her unstable mental state, the abused woman in effectively unable to help herself and that at the very least she needs a "jump start" to get her critical faculties in gear.

Now without being able to see inside her mind we cannot say if she is or is not able to help herself. So I guess you could say we are like psychologists whose armchair diagnoses disagree. No reputable psychologist would make similar statements without seeing the patient himself. Therefore I am beginning to realize that this discussion is absurd.

JC

norman,

coming from an abusive home for many years, i can tell you that you are not able to help yourself in most cases. YOU ARE PARALYZED BY FEAR. in the beginning she probably did stand up for herself. most likely what that got her was a more terrible beating. you learn to be quiet, still, and wait for it to end. i can assure you that is what is going thru her mind. you are afraid of what will happen if you leave. you feel powerless, trapped, desperate, just wishing someone would look at you and help you.

i could go on, but all i really wanted to say was unless you've walked a mile in her shoes, you should keep your opinions to yourself

my advice is call the police, try to see her alone, and offer to take her to a shelter.

Think how you would feel if it was your sister or mother and then what if you come home one day and see an ambulance outside and her leaving in a bodybag.DO NOT SIT AROUND AND WONDER WHAT TO DO! The cell phone is very easy to use and the fact that you could be saving someones life should appeal to you......

i didn't read the thread but if some guy is beating up on a girl you know then put the guy's face through a cement or brick wall. if you can't do it with your fists then take a bat to his face then knees and arms so he will remember it.

btw, wear a ski mask. :D

3.We agree on something.

After all that bashing on me i wonder if i wrote somewhere, that you should go over , watch the bashing until her bf cracks her head open and than make a bet with him how long it takes for her brains to drop to the floor.
Just let me check... no , i didn´t give advice like that.
SO maybe you should start to critique my advice that was to call the cops. But wait , that´s the same as you said.

And if my mom was hit by someone i would tell her to call the police, too, on the first time. But be assured that i wouldn´t have to advice her to do that!
