Just curious if there's anything a dog with hip problems can take besides Duramax which she's getting currently. (It's in the same drug category as Vioxx) It's fairly expensive and I'm wondering if there's anything either OTC or prescription that she can take that will work just as good. 1/2 of a baby aspirin or any anti-inflammatory maybe? Otherwise I'll just keep buying the Duramax.

Cortisone shots. ??? Ask your vet if these would work for your dog.

poor doggie, it's good to see a responsible owner do something to manage pain, I wish all owners were like you. good luck. :)
I have heard people giving NSAIDS but I don't have a clue about dosages or duration, I think the dose goes by weight, but again I dont have a clue about how long they can use it for without tummy sides.

She was supposed to have hip surgery a few months ago but the vet wanted her to lose some weight. She only eats 1/2 can in the morning and 1/2 at night with no snacks other than a chewy bone throughout the day and can't lose weight. Austrailian sheep dog. Not sure if they're known to have hip or weight problems. I'll look into the cortisone or anti inflammatories.

good luck! You are a good bro for taking care of your dog so well. k to you

Smartest dogs EVER, I have had two. Never any hip or health problems at all.
Hard to exercise her when it hurts to move, but one thing you can try to help with pain and exercise... get her into a pool, shallow is good where she can stand, not swim. You don't want her to swim. wading is really great, it relieves the weight and takes perssure off the joints. She will be able to walk in chest deep, then she wont be afraid she is going to drown and have to swim, stay near her, and see if she will walk back and forth. Ant shallow water really will work, lake.. VERY calm ocean... but stay near if you are unsure of the depth.

Good idea! If she doesn't drop any weight by summer I'll give that a shot. Shallow pool for sure. LOL. 55 lbs. I have a feeling she'd sink like a rock it were any higher. :)

I thought about bringing her to one of those dog places where they exercise and play with the other dogs to help with the weight. She's a really nervous dog though. I'm afraid she'd have a heart attack if I left her there for the day. lol. I'll try to do it on my own for now.

Give her massages too. There was article in this natural health magazine about massaging dogs. Do a Google Search.

I have a large dog (from what I understand they are prone to joint & hip problems). I take him to the tennis court on the weekends and let him get som exercise. Also, I give him a deep massage once a week.

You cannot give dogs NSAIDS. Their bodies cannot handle COX-2 inhibitors, which many human anti-inflammatories are. Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid) is one of the worst, as it is a fairly strong COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitor.

Talk to your vet about alternatives, but don't give your dog human drugs for pain. In some instances, human drugs are fine, but this is not one of them.
