Does online communication hamper verbal communication skills?

Have you guys ever wondered whether or not if you spent lots and lots of time online that it might affect your ability to communicate well verbally (in person) with other people?

Like sometimes I think that because I'm so used to talking and just using words and stuff, that I have a hard time adjusting and flipping over to real communication, where body language and tone become real important.

Like I have a hard time switching gears from talking online to talking to people in person, because all of a sudden things like tone and body language become important.

I'm starting to wonder if online dating would really be that smart an idea for me. Maybe I should just resort to talking to people in person.

You really need to relax and become comfortable with being yourself.

lol

lots of ppl spend a lot of time online everyday. maybe it does negatively affect social skills. I think that this is a good question to ask.

i was just talking about this subject to my buddies yesterday...

personally i like to use "lol" and "lmfao" in everyday conversation.. and the occasional "PWNED!!!" with an emphasis on the "P"

-------seriously though, 99% of the girls on those "online dating" sites are messed up... BAD IDEA! Just suck it up and talk to a girl :D

Fuck man, I thought I was gay as shit when I let out a "pee-owned" the other day when I was high. Thats the only internet invented word Ive ever said outloud.

Peoeple don't seem to get it when I saw lol in real life. It looses something in the translation.

actually thinking about this
the internet has been around largely availbale to the public for a good 8 years now
some early teens may indeed suffer from stunted real social skills because of the net

I think so.

I went about 3 months without posting.

My income went up, organization improved, moral increased, and my penis grew.

Worht considering anyway.

Yes, here in the real world, we have evolved beyond your silly "words" and communicate entirely through enterpretived dancing.

Same thing goes for TV. Its the people, not the technology.

except the internet is more interactive
TV allows you to select a channel
the net allows you to interact
but it's still not "real"

Oh no? Are the people online not real? Is the information you find not real? Is the entertainment? Are you or I not real? Sure, there is are certain elements missing, but the sames ones are missing from telephone conversations: are those not real either?

yeah I thought about going into "all" that
but that really wasn't necessary

e.g. the "real" person you're attacking on the net could be physically seriously more dominating than you
yet the net allows you the freedom to still "say" inflammatory things to that "person"
where as in the real world you would probably keep your hole shut

I don't keep my "hole" shut in the real world, really, but I generally don't put myself in situations where I can get the shit kicked out of me because I'm realistic about it.

Same thing about the internet, I don't keep myself censored, plus no threat of bodily harm.

But I did not mean arguements online, that' s just fucking retarded. I was thinking along the lines of, you know, actual sharing of information, etc.

that wasn't meant to be a personal attack
I was just making some points w/o all that goddamn typing that I'm not so fast with

Nope. I'm the same offline as I am online only I'm more animated in person. I have a job that involves dealing with people. I'm a very outgoing chatty kind of person in general.
