Or am I wasting my time here?
I love marketing, it's my passion doinng whatever it takes to acomplish whatever I want to acomplish. Even if it means lying to people for rest of my life.
Plus I want to get into real estate and I think it might help me out in a long run. Also one of my best friends owns a construction business so we gonna partner up and build business buildings as soon as I figure out ins and outs of life in general. Yea I don't know.

wtf are you talking about bro? this post is all over the place. a degree is only worth what you do with it. it's also only a part of what should be a complete package (i.e. work experience, intelligence, street smarts, communication skills, etc.).

want to be in real estate?

Go work construction for two years. Learn framing. Pour some concrete. Install a window. Deal with a GC.

Then go back to school.

I got some work experience. I'm a club promoter and one of my brothers lady friends invited to vegas and said she'll hook me up with a job at a casino. I want to get into bigger better things instead of this type of dirty work though. Street smarts, I got them. I don't want to talk about intelligence mainly because I don't think you can put that and me in the same sentence. But I've been kicking schools ass for past 2 years so who knows. On the bright side communication skills aren't that bad at all. I think I have some potential.

Yes. I have a Marketing degree and own a Construction/Development company. However, more important things needed to do the type of work you are talking about is experience, well thought out plans, and $$$$$$$$$$$$$$! (it helps to be good looking and charming like me):)

Take all the Communication and Personal Selling classes you can. It is a good major, because whatever you do in life...You have to sell yourself...First!

Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Thank you, Tony Robbins. lol

I have a Communications undergrad degree (PR concentration and marketing minor). I think it helps with almost any line of work, with the combo of the other things I discussed. I am in event management/marketing and my degree definitely played a role in preparing me for this job.

Get internships in both of those industries, or side jobs, or just do more research before you jump in.

Since you admit you "don't know", only solution is to "know". :)

Otherwise, you risk feeling 5 years later you made a mistake, feeling disconnected, disenchanted and having to pull a career flip like everyone else these days.

that comment just rubs me the wrong way for some reason - regardless of the topic at hand
your passion should be something you believe in without having to rationalize it like that, right?

I saw it and actually addressed it originally, but then deleted it. I don't have time to argue the ethical aspect of marketing/advertising and how simpletons nonchalantly call it lying without any thought to it.

One will never go anywhere with that attitude. Right now you're thinking of a successful salesperson you might know and thinking you are proving me wrong.

You're not.

Do you want to be a second rate salesperson or marketing director that makes $300K and call that the pinnacle of your career?

Hope not. If you do, well, good luck with that.

The people who do really big things and make really big deals and play in really big worlds treat integrity as paramount. Lie to one of them, mislead them, and you'll never see the light of day again. I work in that world, and i got there through good luck, loyalty, and working my ass off.

Sure, the real estate agent who sells the $10M house might make a nice chunk of change. But if you want to buy the house, play it straight. The world is filled with greaseballs. Not being one will bring you to the attention of people who can do cool things for you.

Agathe, you're young, I gather, and therefore kinda ignorant. But believe me, integrity is paramount.

I was actually talking about cigarette advertising and other bs that hardly ever works. It was just a joke but all you took it a little too serious.

It's funny how that guy has so much karma yet joined in March 05 and has only 273 posts - yet he has three bombs on him, too. Puzzling. Normally you could only get that by being a chick posting up nudies of yourself.

Couldn't agree more.

Hi Agathe,

Good questions. IMHO, to be able to succeed at marketing, you need to be able to sell something. I personally, would never sell something I would not buy myself and I hope you do not either - marketing is not lying.

Second, what kind of marketing do you like best? Here, we do mostly direct response, but there are other kinds to, like a Prada ad - that's marketing, so is sales.

I think before getting a degree in marketing, first figure out what you like to sell, real estate, insurance, stuff like we sell at EliteFitness.com, clothing, etc and give is a try. Then you'll learn what you don't know and if it makes sense to go back to school to learn it.

Also, remember, successful marketing is not just about personality - especially direct response. For example, here's the most interesting marketing I've seen lately. Check out: www.offermatica.com - this is very math intense.
