I have a chance to get a free pure bred dobermin but don't know how much of a hassle they are compared to other dogs.

take time to socialize him/her. if not, you better train it real well. they're very protective.

that's a lot of love.

had one for years. . .great dog. . .however, if the one you're looking at isn't a puppy, i'd check it out real close. . .if it's already been frigged-up in the head by someone else, it'll be a lot of work to straighten it out (if it's possible at all). . .as other's have indicated they're very protective. . .mine was a great play dog. . .loved to chase/fetch frisbees, balls, sticks, whatever, and he could run like the wind. . .i used to get down on my knees in the backyard and throw a nerf football, he'd run and pick it up and then turn around and come tearing across the yard and try to run me over like a friggin fullback, and i'd try to tackle him. . .we'd do shit like that for hours. . .i was a kid, i lived in the sticks and i had a lot of time on my hands. . .

they're very energetic and they like to get out and run/walk a lot. . .

wow, you just gave me the most amazing picture in my head of you being the boy from Lassie....

Anyways, my buddy's parents just had a litter of pups and the Mother and Father are very beautiful and loving dogs. So i'm hoping if I train him/her well and give it lots of attention it won't end up all crazed like how most people stereotype them out to be.

I've been reading up on them and everywhere it says they need at least an hour of full blown exercise a day. (And it didn't mean walks around the block, it meant sprinting/jogging.) Thats more cardio than I do a day, maybe it'll be my training partner.

Awesome Dog, go for it. Do you have kids? Is the dog a pup?
My mother got a doberman when I was about 5 years old. Damn dog was my guardian, protected me and slept on my bed right on top of my feet every night..Very loyal dog, never any problems with him, and man he got to be the size of a horse..
Was a great dog, until he ran away..My older bro was about 15 at the time took him for a walk and the collar slipped off his neck and he ran. lived in a highly populated area down salisbury beach and some one stole him! Sucked cause I missed him.
But yeah, dude it is worth it.

That sucks, lotta weird people up in Salisbury.

I have one, and he's the best dog I've ever had. You need a yard or you'll have to take him to the park every day and let him run. They're working dogs, and they love to work so you'll need to spend the time on that. The only time I ever have to worry about Hannibal is if there are cats around. He never runs, isn't aggressive, but will stay between anyone he doesn't recognize and me. His temperment is great, but they are high strung. I can trust him in a room full of screaming kids that are grabbing his feet and ears, and he's starting to get arthritic. Great dogs, I won't get anything else.

a puppy from two well-behaved parents will most likely be a good dog out of the box. . .as long as you work with him/her regularly and consistently and you enjoy taking the dog out and watching it run. . .you'll end up with a four-legged best friend. . .dobies are very intelligent and, like all working-class dogs, eager to please. . .have fun. . .
