Doctors Say Weight Training Can Rip Aorta

Sounds like you need to be predisposed to heart problems to even begin to worry about that.

Kinda like you need to be predisposed to being an idiot to worry about crushing yourself with the bar while benching.
 
Bullshit, it's just conjecture. Dr Elefteriades is a scaremonger who likes seeing his name in print... don't pay any attention to him.
 
so this guy works out but his family hasd a history of problems and he probably never got cleared by his doc and almost dies. So what you need to look at a few things:
A)history
B) he might have had a condition before lifting
c)He probably would have had an aneurism later on in life (basically anything physical would have weakend the Aorta)

Basic fundamentals tells us, check history, check current physical status, and keep yearly checkups

i was reading this article or a very similar one off of netscape. at the end it said

"It's often misdiagnosed as a heart attack, and physicians don't really understand why the aorta weakens. He [the doc] urges weight trainers to be cautious and limit the lift to no more than 50 percent of body weight."

well if you arent gonna lift more than 50 percent of bodyweight on leg, pushing and pulling movements, it seems almost pointless to lift.

This can happen if you have predisposing conditions or if you have a lot of bad luck. There are some disorders out there (genetically-inherited Marfan's syndrome) or other diseases like syphilis can cause aortic problems which can be exagerbated by heavy lifting. However, I don't beleive this article applies to the average, healthy person.

BTW, I'm a 3rd-year medical student, and I say w/o reservation that most doctors are big pussies and I wouldn't listen to anything a doctor has to say about lifting UNLESS that doctor is a gym rat himself.
 
I swear a day of heavy lifting doesn't go by that I don't rip that thing wide open.

I'm not sure what's causing it - the heavy lifting or the mouth full of pop rocks and carbonated beverages.
