I hate polls, but I'm interested in this. Unfortunately, it took a tragedy like this to make most of us, including myself, realize the importance of a formidable, SUSTAINED military.

only if necessary but I honestly dont see how it would be since today's army doesnt need as much soldiers as in 1942.... technology has a lot to say...

That's true. But I think there's a reason why other technologically advanced countries like Germany still have mandatory service. But they're also only required to enlist for two years, so any "overpopulation" is prevented to a degree.

NO...I don't want somebody fighting beside me that I can't trust. (that doesn't WANT to be there) There is no telling what they'd do....

I believe it would only degrade our forces. You can't MAKE someone want to fight and defend the country. Mandatory drafts should only be instituted in times of dire need.

frorider has a good point. I support mandatory service only if it can be done without degrading our already-eroded (by 8 years of Klinton) military discipline and cohesiveness.
I think that the age of 18 would be a good time to begin showing young adults that their nation is founded and maintained by those who are willing to defend it and its principles.

Only in wartime. All Americans should bear the burden of defending our country during war. This is how we got to be so great.

If you want the good things that this country provides, then you must be willing to defend them if they are threatened. Draft dodgers are the lowest form of human life.

Buck - there is an advatange to draftees. A lot of people who are drafted don't want to be there. The draft has taken them away from something else. So if something is wrong/insufficient/fucked up, they'll bitch about it and get it brought up to standard.

Just a thought.

I agree w/Buck & forider. There are lots of potential probs w/mandatory enlistment, especially with all the young fucks out there who could give a rat's ass about anyone but themselves. If boot camp and training didn't get them into shape (physically & mentally) then they could be a major danger to everyone else in a time of battle.

There could be advantages to it and good outcomes, but with today's society I doubt that's possible. Unfortunate, but true.

Something else you are forgetting:

BAsic training now has all these "values" classes and other shit.

Basic during wartime is shortened and more intensely war-focused. It is a different mentality, and a different kind of training.

Those two words seem to contradict each other. Mandatory Enlistment?
Shouldn't it just be "draft"...Seems to me if you are being made to do something, you are not enlisting. You are being drafted.......

i totally agree

Technology is expensive

I alway hear ppl saying WAR will be high tech with RObots bla bla bka

Who has the potential to use it the US they have the money but the rest of the world
they will use conventional forces. an idiot with a rifle is more cost effective than a 2 milions
$ missile

Some of the best soliders during vietam were drafted. Matt is right. They went in there knowing they were going to die.

I don't think the military should allow some people to join. We need people who want to join/fight and the Nation should reward those who choose to put thier life on the line.

Perhaps the Airforce could use some more weak sissy's but the Army and Marines only need the strong.

BigBuck has a very good point. I used to be in the army cause i wanted to be there. Just remember what happened in Vietnam. Poor soldiers who had no clue about the situation, on drugs to forget the nightmare they were in....... pretty sad thing.

i think the benefits of having individuals serve outweigh the option of having people help out.

i have seen total shitbirds come in and get turned around because they were trusted, motivated and looked at as an equal by some and respected by others. many people that could turn out "bad" have been turned around because they were given a chance. responsibility has a way of shaping people up.

im for it, i think everyone should serve. it would make our enlisted leaders stronger by dealing with the troubled ones and the troubled ones better by learning responsibility.

What makes a warrior in his heart. Mercenaries who are in it for money and draftees in it per force of law cannot compete.

A coach would be a fool to not take a pitcher out of a game who didn't want to be there. (Pedro Martinez tried to tell the Sox....) And that's just baseball.

I agree w/ Buck. If they don't wanna go then fine. I will not look at them the same and they will lose my respect. If they can't go for medical reasons, age, ect., then at least help on the home front. But if they have the physical capability to go, then they should.

I'm physically capable of going. I wanted to go into the Corps before Tuesday and I still want to go now. What kind of Marine would I make if I wanted out when shit hit the fan? Not a very good one.

Freedom isn't free. Its paid by blood, sweat, tears, and lives. I'm willing to give my share for it.

A long time ago I've accepted the fact that one day I will die. I have faith that God will take me when he wants me. Whether its crossing the street to get to school, on a battle field, or when I'm 90 years old and relaxing in a lawn chair thinking my life over. I'm not afraid to die. I by no means want to die any time soon, but I am not afraid. I'm also not afraid to kill. My fore-fathers fought, and died for my freedom. I've lived 17 years of freedom duty free....time to repay the favor.

I wouldn't want someone serving with me that didn't want to be there...I wouldn't feel safe with attitudes like that nearby

the only way I would think it's ok is if we are in a world of shit and have no choice, but if that day ever comes Fuck College and rich kids from getting out of it, everyone will be needed to put their life's on the line

If i were to be drafted id wanna be the crazy motherfucka in the marines with the big fully automatic assault rifle going into head to head combat and blowing shit up.

if i had to enlist i would have a mental breakdown. i can't stand to watch people suffer- i cry watching ER on tv

I say yes, except for the Marine Corps. The very reason the Corps is great is because we only accept volounteers. (sp) Anyway, that being said is most likely where a lot of problems arise from a conscripted army. Therefore, only during war time efforts or at least a mandatory two years in the Reserves.
