Do you still SQUAT?

I see so FEW dudes squatting anymore, everyone seems to be loading up the leg press. I like em too much to quit, just wondering if anyone has given them up...and why...

I dont do them all the time... they take to much out of me, and make me feel nauseous. I don't do them all the time cause my legs look good, and leg presses don't make me fear going to the gym. However, i do believe that squats are probably the best exercise for putting on mass. Just too much for me sometimes

i have stopped squatting for about 6 months now. I got good genes in the leg department so i have maintained my size...but man i really do notice my overall growth has slowed since stopping. I have come to the point where i have to train legs after shoulders or another muscle because I simply wont go to the gym just to train legs....(weak, i know).:bawling:

Squats and deadlifts make the whole body grow! I still do them with degenerative disc disease.

I make myself do them, but i do them on the smith machine. They dont hurt my bad knee on the smith, and it is more stable. They are a must in my opinion.-WULF

I squat 3x a wk, i will admit they are tiring but they hella make you grow more. also they give you a nice @$$ which the girls love.

Never did squats and can't. Too inflexible to get my arms around the bar. :( And I really want to do them too.

Just work on your flexibility then... you really should anyways if you cant even get your arms back far enough to hold onto the bar.

I did them and deadlifts the first 3 or 4 years I lifted but rarely do them now. I don't know what it is, but anymore it is like a roll of the dice with either one of them with my back locking up. For some reason squats and dl's make my back lock up and I am fucked for 3 or 4 weeks, so I just don't fool with them anymore.

FYI I am 6'3" 260lbs at 11% BF and still growing without them

Good god! Is everyone falling apart?? I must be twice the age of some of you and i still do em once a week i set aside a whole day for legs its a brutal workout but i feel better once they are over and talk about sleeping?ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ:p

Squats rocks... I am probably the only person to do em in my gym. Free squats, that is, in the smith usually there is a waiting line.

Deadlifts are even cooler.. love to see the bar bending :D

Squats are the most complete exercise for the lower body. You cannot grow big legs and butt without squatting. Period. I go very heavy squatting on the Smith machine and lighter at the free squat. And it's true, women LOVE a round hard ass. If you keep your legs wide open while squatting, you will hit the glutes much more than the quads.
Long live squats!

I am not a big fan of squats and vowed I would never do them after my football career was over but I still do them. They are definitely one of my cornerstone exercises.

I love squats. I go all the way down ham to calf.

I have had significant ham development since I starting deep squats a few years ago. If you are lagging in the ham department try deep squats. They are my bread and butter excercise for legs.

I incorporate leg presses further on down the line in my leg workout and I only do one legged presses....no sense in wasting my time stacking up the leg press with plates.

Every Wednesday I have a date with the squat rack! There is never a line for it at my gym. Everyone is curling and benching. I think it looks rediculous for a guy to have a developed upper body being supported by tooth pick legs.

I like the feeling of have power in my wheels.

Even Caesar did squats:

"I came, I saw, I squatted."

-------Gaius Julius Caesar

I think that's what he said.

Love'em

I can't wait for leg day.Never a line and most of the beach boys look at ya with awe.Every once in awhile someone get curious and I'll work with them but most go back to curling in a week.

Mad

BUMP for how many guys do front squat???
i've got a love/hate relationship with the squat rack....hate to do them, love getting em done!
for those who don't do them because "they take a lot out of you" try lawn bowling...i hear it's a little less taxing.
EVERY workout i do takes a lot out of me!!!!!! I hate leaving the gym without feeling like i'm gonna pass out no matter what i'm training. Go hard or get the hell out of my gym.
WM;)

Do front squats...or use the smith machine so you don't need to stabilize the bar with your hands.

Jesus Christ thank god theres a few people left on this thread who aren't pussies.

Hit 405 x 10 and 500 x 1 last night, best I've done so far.

SQUATS ARE KING!!!

I can't believe how many on this thread don't like or even DO squats. I LOVE SQUATS! Too much time on the Anabolic forum and not enough time on the Training forum, i tell ya! ;)

If you're not doing squats and deads, and you're thinking you want to start cycling cause you're not gaining anymore....tisk, tisk.

Being a former powerlifter..(turned bodybuilder)..It seems like I hold a squat clinic in the gym every Tuesday.....and deadlifts every Friday......so many questions on form and technique.....it boggles my mind how many people have no idea how to squat or dead.....and I don't mean " 24 Hour Fitness Squats" that end up looking like hyperextensions....I am talking about balls on the floor in the basement squats....SQUATS I LOVE EM......even after acl replacement......PEACE:p

Started doing legs again after a 4 yr layoff last week. Sure don't miss the feeling of being nauseous and feel like puking afterwards. Didn't do too bad i must say. Go almost all the way down where my butt is 4-5 inches fromthe floor. Hit 275 x3 , which i think is good after a 4 yr layoff. Max back then was 375. 100 lbs to go......

Squatting is by far the most effective exercise for total growth. Heavy squats help the body release growth hormone. When people ask me what I do to grow my biceps I tell them squats! They're usually confused by that but it's true.

I hate leg press loaders..

guys who put 14 plus plates a side and move it 5 inches. Makes me sick. I know damn well they couldn't squat four plates a side....If my club had a decent leg press machine, I'd use it along with squats, but the leg press machine is ancient..so I dont' have a choice.

Squat Day is PAYDAY. That's it. That's the day I know I'm gonna cause some growth.

LONG LIVE SQUATS!!

How so? Just do squats with no hands on? Sort of like floating? I am so inflexible it sucks. Even when I trained 6 years in martial arts, stretching almost everyday and I was still not very flexible. But better then I am now.

My leg strength was terrible for a while and squats always hurt my knee, so I only did leg press. But then putting on all those plates became such a pain in the ass so I abandoned the leg press for squats and never looked back. Squats are the hardest thing I do all week, but nothing else feels like such a great accomplishment after heavy squats. My quads have exploded ever since I switched to squats every week.

I can't leave out the fact that my abs have gotten significantly stronger just from squats as well.

squats are suposto be terrible for your spine, and just over all bone structure. I had a back problem for a while, come to find out one of my legs was a bit longer then the other so it threw my hips off, and as a result my spine isn’t straight now because it had to compensate for the bend. anyhow i went to a specialist over the summer in Seattle, he was an orthopedics/what ever doctor, i forget what its called. He said squats are the worst thing you can do for your body, your spine was never built with the intent of holding 500+ extra pounds on it. it can crush vertebrae’s pinch nerves, slip disks, rupture disks, cause rib problems, and its not one of the safest lifts by a long shot, if you loose it its gonna roll down your back and hit every vertebrae on the way down. personally I’ve seen it happen on a number of occasions.

Fuck yes I squat.
If you are not squating you are not really trying to get big in my humble opinion. Any reason you might come up with not to squat is just an excuse for being a pussy.(no offence to the women on this board. many who do squat) Do i like to do it? hell no. but i feel great afterwards.

LOAD THE DAMN BAR and GROW......

Yes I squat, and not on the pussy smith machine-lol. Anyways, did hack squats following several sets of regular free standing squats tonight and my legs got a nasty pump feeling. Finished them off with leg ext, leg curls, calf raises. I did get nauseous toward the end of the workout and thought I was going to puke.

I alternate freesquats/stiff legged deads with deadlifts/smith squats or front squats you pussies... :D

Hold up SofaGeorge

You are a vet here and i say this with respect - If you don't do squats or deads then don't bother lifting? That's a bunch of shit. While they are both cornerstones to gaining mass, they aren't the be all end all of working out. I take my training and diet seriously, but I don't do squats or deads anymore. I herniated a disc and was out for 2 months. I hear guys say they came back fine after such an injury, but I'm striaght up scared of fucking up my back again. squats are great for leg developement and mass, but the deadlift seemed like so much trouble to only really be hitting the low back and traps. they do work the legs, but that's what squats are for.

you can use the cambered bar to get around this issue and start squatting today, while you work on your flexability:D

if someone is putting gear in their body and they aren't even squatting, they are a fucking joke and deserve to not grow

Hey bro I was the same way before, I still can't do squat like every body in the gym. My problem is that I have a huge rib cage, and I can't put my arms behind my neck.

You should try to wrap you arms around the bar touching the plates with your finger, or hand, that way your arms are parelle to your shoulders. Or you could try fronts squat. Try that and let us know if it works for you!!

Squats!

Squats, deads, and heavy pressing are what produced every large BB out there in the past and the present. At some point in time they all performed these lifts and reaped the benefits. I myself have seen many a day looking into the toilet after an excrutiating set of squats..."ralph" I have gone as high as 805lbs in the squat, but presently prefer higher reps in the 405lb range..usually 15-20's. The most difficult lifts ie. squat and deadlift offer the most benefits in overall body growth and GH release during training. A few years ago I injured my lower lumbar squatting 705...a collar let go and the weights slid on one side causing the bar to twist and dip...hurt like hell..dropped the weight..therapy for a month...back to squatting over 600lbs in less than 2 months...then decided to drop deads and squats altogether to protect my back...the opposite occurred..back seemed to get worse..more pain..any slight twist would set it off...i introduced deads and squats again ..slowly at first working up...never felt better..back is now rock solid...deadlifting 500 for easy sets of 10 and squatting 405 for sets 15-20 off a block narrow stance...isolating the quads as much as possible.I dont train as heavy as I used to..now i try to train smarter...higher reps, isolating the muscle as opposed to just powering it up. If oyu are trying to increase leg, back and overall body size give these exercises a go..you will be amazed at teh results!

Down the road, in a gym far away
A young man was heard to say,
"No matter what I do, my legs won't grow!"
He tried leg extensions, leg curls leg presses too.
Trying to cheat, these sissy workouts he'd do!
From the corner of the gym where the big guys train,
Through a cloud of dust and in the midst of pain,
Where the big iron rides high, and threaten lives,
Where the noise is made with big fourty-fives,
A deep voice bellowed as he wrapped his knees,
A very big man with legs like trees,
Laughing as he snatched another plate from the stack,
Chalked his hands and monstrous back,
Said, "Boy, stop lying and don't say you've forgotten!
Trouble with you is you ain't been squattin'!"

What if you are not squatting a lot of weight (135x20)? I have the same problem with my back because 1 SI joint is turned in and the other is turned out so one side is .5 inches longer than the other. :(

Mr. Maddog is quite the poet......my strength coach at K.U. put it a little differently...... "Quit your bitchin' you little fucking girl, it's only 740 lbs. save the tears for the big boy weights" ( Coach Black Kansas University). What a guy.....chokes me up just thinking about him.

Peace!

dude squats are king!!!! i started with 3 plates a few years ago and didnt move up until i could do 3 sets of 25!!! the most i ever did was 5 plates for 2 sets of 25 and 1 set of 19..... ya they make ya puke, but they help ya grow too!!!! i do stuats every other thursday, the off day i do deadlifts, my lower back cant take both exercises in the same week.............use em

Honestly, I hate every set of squats I do, but I love the results. Nothing gives you the satisfaction of getting under a heavy bar and getting more reps than you did last time. It takes a strong person to do the exercises that he/she doesn't like. That in my opinion, is what makes you a better bodybuilder.

I squat 'till I can't. I feel if I can survive them, the rest of my week should be easy in the gym.

Props to Curious George because he took the words out of my mouth. Bodybuilding is about overcoming obstacles, that is why it is too hard for most people to be good at. If people can't suck it up and do squats, they need to think twice about calling themselves bodybuilders. I do love you all though.
