Do you shut your pc off every night or leave it on

I've left my new one on constantly, except for when I clean the inside once a month or tinker with the hardware. I don't even use standby anymore at night because it usually never stays there when automatic updates trigger it back on. The only time I shut it off is if I leave the house for at least a weekend or more at a time.
I've read good arguments for both sides but find that my power bill isn't noticeably higher since doing this, and it's actually less stress on your components idling day in day out instead of starting up/shutting down everyday.

I use Vista.

So I press that little 'Sleep' button on the fly-out taskbar.

Actually that's what MS recommends.

lol at PuddleMonkey's avatar....alcatraz is a big bro though! He'll squish your head like a grape.

I leave mine on 24/7. Too lazy to turn it off.

i leave it on, the monitor turns off, but the computer doesn't. maybe i should make it go into sleep mode?

sometimes i have pron downloading all night

From what I know (and I may be wrong) turning your computer off and on can shorten the life of your computer. On the other hand, keeping your monitor on all the time without a screen saver can burn out the or ingrain images on the screen.

I do turn off my monitor.

i leave mine on the all the time its always doing something.. my cpu usage is always around 70 percent

That was more likely to happen with DOS where the same text remained on screen for hours or days at a time. It's not really going to happen today, especially with LCDs. An LCD in power saving only uses about 2 watts per hour.

I turn mine off for the noise.

What processor do you have?

Also, regardless of your power habits it's a good idea to look inside your case every couple months or so because the more it's on the more dirty it will be, especially with intake fans.

I take it that's Fahrenheit correct? What case do you have? My E6600 gets up to about 43 C when playing Crysis, but idles about 10 degrees lower. The stock cooler does a pretty good job.

I usually hibernate the Pute. Also I have my monitors shut off after 30 minutes without use.
Thinking about spinning down my hard drives when not in use - any feed back on that?

Never heard of any benefits from it unless you're transporting your tower/taking them out of the tower.

I mention it because the HDD is one of the few vital components that has moving internal parts, and I've had 4 HHD failures (one out of the box) in the last 6 years.

Has anybody used a WD Raptor? I've read that they (the 150) have a life expectancy of 137 years!

He seems to like Zalman cooling solutions.

That thing is a behemoth. Would it even fit in a mid tower I wonder.

it might but it might be tight i have always had full cases

I like the Lian-Li styling but they have fallen behind. They need a quiet mid tower with 12cm fans. I will probably go Antec for my next. It's a little boring looking but it performs. My PC is 4 feet from my bed so low noise is a premium.

ill post my pics of the case i have my 8 way quads xeons in, its huge
