Do you find yourself laughing when guys can't

do their own minor electrical, plumbing and general household repair?

change some switches
install a dimmer switch
replace a stem on the sink levers
fix the heating coil in the dishwasher
re-lite the pilot light in the dryer
find a stud to hang up shelves

I have a buddy with a busted toilet in the basement. His wife fixes EVERYTHING in the house, so everytime we go over there, we ask him when he's going to beg his wife to fix the toilet.

He had a screwdriver out the other day, and one of the guys asked if he was going to get in trouble for using his wife's tools.

So yeah, we laugh at him all the time.

Guess you had to be there.

My exhusband and I used to LOVE guys like this because, of course, we would make ez money. The only thing funnier is a joe homeowner who THINKS they can do thier own minor electrical work. When my ex would go out to fix his fuck up the attitude would be, "Bend over and lube up Mr Smarty pants"!

...that's not funny.

What about doing stuff in the basement....does that count?

I do our home improvement and repairs, but that's because I worked for a home improvement store for about 3 years. It's funny because my hubby is a design engineer degreed in mechanical engineering and he will review with me how things are made before fixing the darn thing. He doesn't know practical solutions and doesn't have common sense. (Sorry, babe :D .. I gotta tell the truth. LOL) Seriously, he does do other things like electrical work and carpentry which I won't do so I don't laugh...we balance each other out. :)

The secret to home repair is to know when your ego is bigger than your abilty.

Everything I learned, other than basic plumbing (that was trial, error and bad luck ithplumbing) I learned from an ex beau and from always being on jobs sites looking over the subs shoulders and asking lotsa questions.

Bikinimom is right, electrical work is the biggest and most dangerous area you can easily screw up when you have no idea as to what you are doing. Or worse you think you know it all.

I always fell for the guys that worked with their hands ............. mmmmmmmm never met an electrican I didn't find hella sexy.

Plumbers on the other hand...

Corn,

Depends, how are you at laying tile?

:goof:

heh.

I earn a good income so i prefer to pay others to do it for me. Manual labour is for the birds.

I can do most of the minor stuff. I don't mess with major electrical issues, but replacing and fixing things I can do.

I can even cook too.;) ;)

So....we are calling it "tile" now??

;)

Want an estimate??

I work cheap......but I would need to see your basic foundation.....

it is not economical. calculate your hourly salary, ask yourself how much time it would take you. compare that to how much it would cost to get a mullet to do it.

i agree with vinyl...

Most contractors and/or subcontractors are DIY guys that decided to do it for a living. Nothing is out of reach for a motivated DIY person with a willingness to do some research and have some patience. It's better to do it right the first time.

If I wanted to do that type of work, I wouldnt went my ass to college...

I dont care what the woman thinks.

Growing up we moved a lot as my parents would gut a house, remodel it, and move up to something bigger and more in need of care. So I'd always hoped to end up with someone who knew how to do all of that. Now I'm with a general contractor but though I know how to fix all sorts of things around the house, he's such a perfectionist it kind of takes the fun out of it.

One of the silliest things I've ever seen was my college roommate trying to hammer a nail into the wall. It was very "stereotypical female". It shouldn't take 10 hits of a hammer to get a little nail in. So finally I helped her. Apparently she wasn't like me and hadn't built her own Barbie furniture growing up.

LOL, did your Barbie dollhouse also have a jacuzzi and a Subzero fridge?

I can do alot of the smaller stuff around the house, but if I start in on a major project (new wood floors) then that will affect something else in the house, which would turn into another major project, which then would require the whole backside of the house to be remodeled, as well as the kitchen, upstairs bath and basement.

I am going to wait, then hire a contractor to take care all of it at once.

I'm an above average plumber and a decent wood butcher....

I LOVE having a project going.....

Velvett, you may find electricians sexy but I guarantee that you find rich men that don't have to do their own home repairs even sexier.... come on you know it's true

I laugh just as hard when a woman can't do these things. I mean, how hard is it to sweep, mop, dust, etc.

grew up working in building. i can tile, concrete, do some roof work, major and minor demolitions, fit split systems, weld, and all the crap you pick up over 10+ years

even so i dont touch electrical. even if i didnt have a network of mates who do it all for me ( :D ) for free, i still wouldnt touch it. i dont doubt that i could if i really really really wanted to, but theres some places i just wont go

its not fair that you laugh at people who cant do something out of their area of expertise.

I wonder about people who I give my address to because they ask for it and then never send what they said they would. I wonder if they do not have ulterior motives. Such as working for the Feds?

no, we don't own a house...yet.

but i do laugh at my boyfriend when he can't figure out directions even when has a map in his face.

No, not really.

If you want to think along those lines.
Sexy is when you know how to do something but don't have to.

It's very unsexy for a man that has the means but not the knowledge to do basic household tasks.

Sexy can be found in a man means but that means offers no guarantee.

So it's not a money thing it's an individual person to person thing.

LOL

My electrican and plumbing skills are better than my vacuuming skills.

....then again I just hate vacuuming.

Simple connection.

:)

Well I dont need to do that shit... I have more useful stuff to do like post on elite. Im no worker man... I have people doing that:D

If it is something I cant fix or do not have time to fix, I let my fingers do the walking. There is no shame in my game, if I cant fix it I pay someone who can. I want it done correctly the first time, I dont want it to linger like an infected wound.

My dad was pretty handy around the house growing up. He made alot of furniture, clocks, finished walls, poured concrete...he can do it all.
He's also missing a left thumb and forefinger after losing a battle with a tablesaw.......know your limitations.

I find myself laughing when a woman can't cook. I also find myself laughing when a woman can't do those simple household repairs. It's not rocket science.

LOL, yeah, 5 minutes to put in a dimmer switch vs I'd guess $100-200 to get an electrician out to the house. I guess you could just hire a handyman. But some things are soooo easy, it is just pathetic to spend more time lining someone up, being home, or setting it up for them to get in, etc. not to do just do them yourself.

Oh yeah, and your hourly salary when you're not working is $0, lol.

I dont care what the woman thinks.

You should care what others think.

But you could brush up on your english grammar.

;)

I can do most of those things, and have, but I never want to. I'd rather have the handyman do them... besides, he'd got a family, he needs work... why not delegate the things I don't like doing?

I can certain clean a bathroom or kitchen.. and vaccum.. but I don't like to, and that's why i use a house cleaner.

Makes perfect sense.
(Note to self: find house cleaner)

The whole point of this thread was to point out that helplessness is not attractive. Not in men or in women.

My last gf was one of those helpless June Cleaver types who couldn't do anything outside of the kitchen or bedroom (and she didn't do much here).
I want a chick. A chick is a woman who can handle all her own business and doesn't need a man, but WANTS one.
