Do you feel you're addicted to coffee?

I know I am and I'm wondering how many other people feel they are too.

I never drank coffee at all until summer of 2002 when I was starting my 2nd year in college and started working fulltime. At first it was just one regular sized cup each weekday morning but now I'm up to at least one big mug of nuclear strength coffee I brew myself here at work in my own special little coffee pot with beans I grind myself the night before. And I also have to drink it on the weekends now too because I get a really nasty caffiene withdrawal headache if I dont.

I think its messing with my hormones too since I have like zero sex drive pretty much all the time but I keep drinking it.

caffiene is my life. My life is caffiene. We are one. Aummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

i had 2 cups this morning, and will often have another or maybe a cappuccino around 3pm.

my grandma told me once she drank 30 (small) cups of coffee during a shift at the factory she used to work at back in the day....that's insane

What's this realationship to Low Sex Drive and Coffee?

Tell me this isn't true.

You know I cant remember for sure. MS on the women's board mentioned this waay back. I think its mostly a woman thing though so you probably dont have to worry about it. Maybe it supresses testosterone but more likely it makes the female hormones go wacky.

Increases dopamine levels and suppresses appetite (well, technically the coffee itself increases your appetite, but the caffeine suppresses it - so if you drink decaffeinated coffee, you are actually going to make yourself hungry).

My sex drive was gone before I ever started drinking coffee.

I wondered if I was addicted - so I just stopped drinking it. No change.

Whether or not I drink it, I am tired all of the time - but I like the way it tastes, smells, and makes me feel (dopamine surges).

I also feel more creative after a cup or so of it.

I'm also on Adderall. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 12. Could be coffee effects me differently than everyone else. I used to have mad hyperactivity which is very unusual with girls, but these days its mostly crap concentration.

Never thought maybe the sex drive thing could be related to taking my meds [/I]and[/I] drinking mad amounts of coffee.

I have no idea where creativity would come out of it.

It is a CNS stimulant, so everything is overclocked - so perhaps it is from that. Or perhaps you just feel creative on it - dopamine just makes you feel better about things.

That said, I an read back through all of my posts on here and I can tell when I had a nice dose of coffee in me.

I never get the jumpy nervous feeling though. I dont know if that's because of my ADHD. I actually go the opposite way. Caffiene is a CNS sedative. But damn I can concentrate so incredibly well. I am so focused and sharp. Its like my IQ goes up 20 points.

HELL YEA!!!!!!!!

cafffine makes the world go 'round....without coffee i would be one mean, pissed off 6-1 240 pound asshole!!

No sex drive and your 21 years old? I would hate to be the guy that marries you.

I probably only have 2 cups right away when I hit work in the morning...but I drink Diet Coke all day long. The coffee I could give up in a heartbeat...but the Diet Coke never!! :)

I have flirted with caffeine addiction all my life. I notice I gain weight while on it. I find if I can stayy off the caffeine for a while, especially while I am "on." One strong cup of coffee a day helps me keep my gains and I even gain a little weight post-cycle. I think it helps with HPTA recovery. But that's just from how I feel nothing to do with actual medical studies.

Another thing it helps with is keeping the brown soldiers marching down the pipes. Most effective digestive tonic out there IMO.

I have found that coffee stresses me out more than coke. Apparently there are other compunds in cofffee that cause stress. Whereas with sodas you are just getting the pure caffeine.

Anyways the only way to do it is to keep your beans and your grinder in the freezer. Then right before you brew grind the SHIT out of those beans. Keeping everything cold makes sure you don't heat up the beans which causes bitterness. Also the essential oils and flavors are kept in the bean.

Then brew normally. This will yield the best tasting coffee bar none.

I am on a 6-week hiatus from caffeine. on day 2. Already feels like longer but I think I will sleep better for it.

Oh yeah and BTW first thing after waking is THE time to drink coffee. IT just feels different than any other time. It just feels RIGHT.

I do keep my beans in the freezer but the grinder too? Damn you're hardcore.

About the stress level, I've read coffee raises cortisol which is considered a stress hormone. I've been gaining some butt blubber recently and cortisol is supposed to cause weight gain too. Your body thinks you're in a stressful environment and starts hording calories to protect itself. However the stress related fat gain in women is supposed to be in the lower abdomen and I'm still totally flat there. Maybe its just too many enchiladas and burritos.

God I'm really an addict. Typing this post is making me jones.

I start my day with a Diet Coke within 2 minutes of waking. I then proceed to a Large Tim Horton's coffee...and maintain the caffeine levels with Diet Coke all day long. Diet Coke is the best!!!

So add some ephedrine, asprin, and yohimbe into the mix. The yohimbe may even awaken you below the belt....

LOLOL You're a total junkie like me. I grind them until their powdered for that very same reason.

What brand beans do you buy?

Starbucks is OK when you need a fix but it definitely wouldnt be my choice. Yep Kona is pretty sweet stuff.

One of the things I asked for this xmas was some really high end pricey beans just to see if it was all hype or if there really was a quality difference between the $7 a pound stuff and the $30 a pound stuff.

yeah....damn i shoulda asked for that too...that's a good idea

hey anya, you're puerto rican right?

ever try Pilon?

Mexican by birth. I think Manny is PR.

Is Pilon from the islands?

The single best beans I have ever had (and I have tried plenty of coffee, I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur but I have tried up to about $10 a lb. there is definitely a point of diminishing returns around $4-7 per lb.) are the Costso house Brand Sumatra blend. I think it was like $6 for 2 lbs and it kicks the ass of any Starbucks blend and gounrmet coffee boutique blend I have ever had. They were roasting the coffee right in the store, it was really cool.

Second best is a blend called "High Mountain" st a lolca coffee roasters arounf the corner from where I work. I have tried their Mocha Java, Yergacheffe, Kenya AA, and others all at upwards of $7 a lb and nothing beats the costco stuff.

The starbucks Narino Supremo is probably third. Considered the best coffee in the world. It's pretty good. If they have it brewed I'll drink it but I won't pay for it to take home and brew.

anya I'm not sure if I understand...you consider $7 NOT to be high-end pricey stuff? and $30 is? Trust me, the $30 are NOT 4x as good as the $7 beans.

I consider $7-8 the high-end pricey stuff! LOL

For those of you that enjoy a varied caffeine supply throughout the day, I highly recommend the www.thinkgeek.com section that is all dedicated to caffeine.

I have a caffeine molecule as my avatar on another site that I frequent and it is one of the things that I would seriously contemplate getting as a tattoo on my fat body.
I used to have the caffeine molecule mug off of thinkgeek, but I apparently got rid of it when I moved - now at work I use a FedEx mug that *just* holds two K-Cups from our Keurig (sp?) work machine.

At work I drink French Vanilla because I have yet to determine if they add any sugar to that to get the flavor. Anywhere else I just drink black coffee. I never add anything to my coffee and look down on those that do as lower.

Oh I do think $7 per pound is good stuff, I just wondered about the hype surrounding the $30 per pound beans. My question was is there really any additional quality and flavor or is it just the prestige value of crazy assed expensive coffee.

BBQ thanks for the link. I'll be checking that out right now. :)

I used to drink 1 100g jar per week when I was a student... 4 years of that turned me into a neurotic mess...

Caffeine does have some merit as a pick-me-ip/anti-depressant, but it's best not to rely on it.

Ya kidding? I'm fairly sure I'll get my own page in Starbuck's Annual Report this year. YES, I like Starbucks, I don't care how "Last Millennium" it is.

A girl in my Starbucks started to call out my Caramel Macchiato as a "Grande Why Bother Caramel Macchiato". I had no idea what she was talking about but then I realized that I ordered it decaf (which I don't anymore) and fat-free.

I've tried to order a "Why Bother" in a number of different stores around town and no one has ever even flinched! I don't know if this is a local thing but try it (if you want decaf/fat-free), ya never know...

yeah that's a really common term in the coffee biz. everyone who has worked at a coffee joint knows it. Anything decaf with skim.

I can go with out but I prefer not too. I wouldn't say I am addicted one cup is enough for the day. Now if you want to see true addicts watching the engineers at my company go crazy when we run it is great sport ... Note to self in the new year hide coffee can and giggle my ass of as the scramble for life blood.

Replace the regular coffee with decaf and see what happens to the poor little addicts and productivity. You'll be shocked. It fucks everyone up.

Caffeine has dopaminergic activity:

Coffee drinkers have more sex and less sexual impotency:

Coffee/caffeine has value as an anti-depressant:

LMAO i've seen that before!@

I couldn't live w/o coffee

and by coffee I mean the real stuff, not the brown juice you drink at a Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts

A blue Mountain, a Costa rica or Maragogype from Mexico is worth a good wine :p

This is a great idea but they move slow enough as is ... I am sure they would notice rather fast never the less I may try it. Just for shits and giggles.

If you really want to fuck up the workplace, don't change the coffee - that will just make everyone really irritable and they won't know why.

Instead, swap out the sucrose (sugar) for dextrose.

That is when the magic goes down.

why? they would notice right away cos it's not as sweet.

Back in the day my father worked at Merck. In the break room, they were out of sugar (sucrose). Being lazy, they noticed that they had a lot of dextrose on hand, but no sugar. Dextrose is sweet, why not just use that?

Apparently one reason not to use it is that it is a laxative. It was a busy day in the office bathrooms that day.

huh. I and I'm sure dozens of members of EF use dextrose consistently in post-workout shakes and I have nevre heard of this phenomenon.

I haven't read up on it, and I very well may be remembering the wrong filler that they used in their pills there - but IIRC I think the issue with any sugar being a laxative is that in sufficient quantities it increases movement of water into the large interesting or something.

I'm sure there is someone here that can go into it.

Sugar alcohols, in large quantities, have laxative effects

I have never heard dextrose being laxative though

funny fact:

when I quite caffeine and ECA's I actually am able to drop wieght more rapidly while dieting.......

I have no idea why..........

however I do take Thermorexin from time to time for its bar non powerfull appetite supressing qualities......

othe than that caffeine is horrible

Try and go without it for a couple of days.
And you can tell if your addictive or not. Headaches..

Caffeine stimulates your pancreas that's the reason you get a little hungry while drinking it.

And it's sucralose (artificial sweetener) that has a laxative effect.

thats not good

yes, caffeine induces a very light insulin spike

But so small you should not care about it (unless you've just eaten 5,000 calories of high GI carbs and fat)
