Do you deadlift?

i need to start doing some deads, I have been wanting to for a while but havent had much of a chance lately to get to the gym due to school

not for the weak of heart or mind. somedays, i get sick earlier in the day, knowing that i'll be standing over a barbell that is probably too heavy for me to lift, but i am going to reach down, grab it and pull until i think i might end up doing serious harm to myself. in order to build, you must first destroy.

Yes I do both rack and regular I think rack is better for me as it really focus more on the back. Regular deads I tend to use my legs a bit and they don't need to grow an more rack just targets the back better for me.

Yeah i understand what you are saying.
Personally i love both, but because of my height regular deadlifts have to be done perfectly. or else im gonne mess my back up.

Yeah, get the technique in first. practice them alot, then increase the poundage slowly.

Yeah, it requires a solid mind. If you watch the rack dead movie you can see me focusing intensly. You have to beat the mind before you beat the bar.

yes, it has deff changed the thickness and density of my back

i so agree! I started doing rack deads to get my upper back thicker. And i think its working great.

ya
I havent really dont them before
I think i will start off with some rack deads with light weight and gradually try to build as long as my shoulder can handle the weight.

you mean theres people out there that dont squat or deadlift?

Yep - most of the people in my gym......I think I'm the only one who does deads......

yeah same shit at my old gym (ymca, go figure). New gyms pretty sweet, some big guys in there and not many bicep boys.

I'll be going to DL as soon as my stomach settles. I have much angero to work outo today.

My grip sucks though. I need straps for anything over 275 if I go for reps.

do some thick bar holds. if ya don't have one, wrap a towel around a bar.

I've been forcing myself not to use my straps even tho I could go heavier if I used them just to help my grip get better......

Should I just hold the bar for a few seconds, or actually do DL's like this? Like put 315 lbs on there and hold it for 10 seconds and repeat that 5 times?

go as long as you can. and, if you're interested, check out the ironmind catalog. tons of stuff for hand strength.

i do quite a few variations of dls
hack
sldl
pl style
narrow stance style
never do rack pulls, never got much outta them
i always wear a quaility inzer belt with weight over 315

cuz a set of 10 would last much longer than 10 seconds. go for 30-40. then add weight.

yes - I have to be a bit carefull due to back issues....

that said - my waist HAS gotten bigger as a result of doing them.....while my squat will go up when I DL.....I get better back development form doing heavier partials(rack pulls) and adding in hypers/rev hypers and stiff dumbell deads

I personaly add them in occasionally as I dont see enough gains to do them all year

I personally dont care much about my grip. Im a bodybuilder, not a powerlifter. so i use straps when needed.

Yes, I do DL, but only have done the partial deadlifts once a few years ago. I didn't like them too much, so I stopped. Regular DL are great though.

I've been watching a few DL on YT and have noticed the form isn't as good as it should be. Maybe it's me, but even the clip you showed had the guy lock out too early and raise the rest with his lower back. The way I understand it is you must lock out the knees and lower back at almost the same time if not THE SAME time. Maybe I'm wrong, I'm certainly no pro. Someone else may answer that question better than I can about form.

Also, the guy in the vid looks real good. I don't want to take anything away from him personally. Seems hella strong. Damn.

guy in the video is me lol.
being 6'2 and mostly legs, my technique will look a bit strange. but as long as i keep my back straight i will be allright :)

yep.....you want to time the hip thrust and the lockout so that the hips do the vast majority of the work...its an issue I have as well

i'm the same. i have to lean over instead of squat down to get the weight. it makes me get slack in my arms.

Good job in the vids Stig.

Same issues as you and HT - getting down to the bar is difficult

thanks man. yeah i would love to be able to go deeper in my knees, but that just doesnt feel right. maybe im not strong enough in my legs yet.

but the rack deads feels great.

it's my sticking point, the set up. getting and staying tight for a big pull.

DL's knock the hell out of me. I love it though. The feeling of accomplishment is what does it for me. Just "Power" for some reason. Going heavier and heavier, it's gotta be doing something right. lol

i seem to have better form on my max sets. i respect the weight more, if that makes sense....

The Shadow said:
yeah.....you cant bull it up
i do have a habit of snatching at or jerking a lighter weight. big weight means i pull slow and let the weight rise, like a rocket lifting off....

Yep. Stopped for a year because I was pullin close to 5 bills with bad form and fucked my back up. I stay around 385 now.

aw shit, i hate injuries. hope you get better bro.

340, last time i tried.

I do deads every week but have yet to make it over 400lbs which is shitty bc I'm weighing in at 175 today. Haven't done rack pulls, do they help or something?

I do them, not as much as I used to though. Does anyone else use an alternate grip, one hand over, one hand under?

Depends on where your sticking point is, mine was at my kneecaps so I would do rack pulls and romanian deadlifts.... If its off the floor, I would do elevated pulls or pull off plates or blocks.... Work your posterior chain if you want a bigger dead.... lowerback, glutes and hammys....

When competing I was a deadlifting fiend. But now that I am a bit older and feel no need to punish myself (just trying to maintain a bit before I leave the planet LOL). I will superset light deads with other movements every now and again. But I must be carefull as my joints can not handle the stress of heavy weights any longer. I basically train in circuits now, alternating upper body with lower. Adding in some light cardio. Cant wait till we get settled and I can begin swimming laps and am looking for ice-skating rink.

Deads are excellent mass builders. I had a hellastrong back... back in the day. :)

Looking good there Stig.... as always.

A powerfull exercise to have in your arsenal is the deadlift.
Do you do them?

If yes. why?
If no. Why?

What about rack deadlifts. Do you like then? tried them?

Here is a video of deadlifts for those that dont know them

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMwKsypDKB4

And here is a video of rack deadlifts:

If you don't do deadlifts then you are obviously not a bodybuilder.

Maybe it was a rhetorical question.

And also, in both videos, the man is locking his knees, and it looks terribly bad. He will lose his knees very shortly if he keeps that up. And it makes the excercise less effective.

I see a lot of pros, even in the gym, locking their knees on deadlifts and even squats. And not surprisingly they are wearing stupid bands around their knees.

DON"T LOCK YOUR KNEES.

thanks.

260lb. fatty here. got any fancy catsup?

Deads are pretty much the highlight of my week, I look forward to doing them. Blood, sweat, chalk, tears, and screaming. The only day I am not stoked for is bench and that's because my bench is the suck.

Right now I'm pulling in the 400's for reps without a belt. Don't usually belt up until I am in the mid 5's. Changed my form so I am staying light for now.

Cheers,

light, lol. sometimes light is worse. nothing like a nice dizzying set of 10, 12, 20 reps.....

I can't even remember the last time I did 10 reps on deads, probably 7yrs or so ago. Six is about as high as I'll go. I typically to 3x5 on dead until it's time to go heavy.

My first two sets are always 8 reps. because i don't want to fail in third, i do only, 4-6.

when i feel burnt on them, i'll do like 8 or 10 sets of 2. cuz i never feel that you shouldn't do them.

I usually switch up to rack pulls for a while to break up the full pulls. If I do reps it's usually like a 5x5 or rarely a 1x10. I also like doing speed pulls too.

Not since the back got injured.

Fuck, they are the funnest thing on earth, bar none. And just about the only lift I was very strong in.

Never gotten that comment about my knees before. ill take it into consideration the next time i deadlift, thanks.

ANd thank to everbody for making this a great thread.

the only reason i look like i can squat more than my pathetic level is because of deadlifts.
