Do they have to nuke phones before you activate them?

My dad's old phone is better than the one I use so I want to use it on my account now. Can I go ahead and put in contacts before Verizon activates it or will that wipe out whatever I do?

Nothing happens to your phone physically when they activate it, its all on their network that the changes take place, so you could probably port the numbers over now.

It wouldnt be a bad idea to do a hard reset before you put your stuff in, just to clear out any data from the previous owner.

If they are from the same carrier or unlocked AND GSM why not just swap the SIM cards?
Because the Samsung sch-a650 doesn't use one.

you can do it right on Verizons website. Just go into your account and you can swap phones from there. Takes just a couple minutes.

I do it all the time.
