Do people nowadays only care about themselves?

Weather was horrible today for the rush hour ride home. Halfway home I see a car on the side of the road with the hood up and two elderly people standing by it.

I stop to see what the problem is and they proceed to tell me that they have a flat and the husband is not strong enough to change it. They were there a half hour and not 1 person stopped to ask if they could use some help. The selfishness of people nowadays boggles my mind. How hard would it have been to stop and ask if they needed help?

They asked if I had a phone so they could to call CAA, with the weather the way it was and all the accidents happening I told them they would be waiting for hours and that I would change it for them.

They were so nice, I told them to wait in my car while I fix the flat but they said they couldn't do that since i was out in the elements.

After I was done the women said God bless you and tell your Momma she did a good job in raising her boy lol.

Its funny, with the way I look people are always intimidated but never the elderly or children, they have the ability to see past the exterior and I guess it gets lost in the years between.

I had a cop do the very same thing to me.

His exact words were, "good luck with that" - he didn't even bother getting out of his car.

LAZY and SELFISH.

are you kidding me? A cop did that?

Honey if I drove by you and saw you in need of help, I am changing the flat, your oil and taking ya for dinner ;) ;)

That was a very nice thing for you to do......

Although if I had a flat & some guy stopped for me & I was alone, I'd sit in the car with the doors locked, ready to dial 911........cuz not only are everyone about themselves BUT most cannot be trusted.....

i totally agree

pretty much

get used enough, especially by people you care about, and you start going the same way

ive changed a few flats and jumped out of my car to help push some stopped car off the road a few times. gotta do something about that.

I have always stopped, always will. I had someone stop for me once when I went off the road and I know how much I appreciated it.

It's been like that for awhile. Amplify it 10x if you live in la. We REALLY don't give a shit about each other. Just "stay out of my way" attitude.

I've had that happen to me back when I used to ride my Harley. I stopped to help this woman with a flat tire and she locked her doors and told me that she had already called the cops. :worried:

I've also stopped to help people and they have been very thankful for the help. I understand people being skittish, but it still throws you for a loop when they call the cops on you for offering to help them.

I was in Tenn during a flood and my car slid down the on ramp spun around twice and end up in a ditch of mud covering my tires completely.

I looked out, took my shoes off and stepped through the mud bare foot and walked onto the highway - the desolate highway.

Not too long after a man in a little maroon yugo picked me up and brought my wet starnded self to a gas station. The whole thing was a shock because my NY plates were not recieved well in TN, AR or MO and yet he picked me up anyway.

Yea I was first on the scene of an accident a few years back while on the Harley. The lady didn't do what yours did but she did judge me and wasn't nice until she realized I was there to help and later thanked me and apologized.

The cops that came on the scene were cool and to this day still give me a wave as it is a rural route I travel often.

I find that rural people are always the most friendly. About 8 years ago I went off the road and was buried pretty good in a ditch. Farmer stopped and said we will take care of ya. Called his boys and they brought the combine down and pulled me out. This all took over 2 hours of their time and I couldn't believe it. They saved me and my GF a lot of money and wouldn't take anything for it.

Yes, for the most part people now-a-days are very selfish...especially it seems in relationships. I plan on writing a book about it. I already have the title.

You're a good man, it's good that you aren't jaded by how the rest of the world sees you and you did the right thing.

PROPS, and she's right, your mother did raise you the right way.

Well, I wouldn't judge anyone cuz of the Harley -- Love Harleys!!

BUT we've had numerous cases around here of men posing as cops, pulling women over & raping them as well as women being attacked when some "nice guy" stops to change their tire.... SO -- it's not you personally, but there are so many FREAKS out there ready & willing to attack you that you can't allow youself to let your guard down when someone does something nice for you -- especially on the highway.....

Now, when I'm in the grocery store, and an elderly lady in a wheelchair needs help getting something off a high shelf, etc -- I help out....

Have to go with the opposite in regards to old people. I was on leave in August and had to go to the store. Not having time to shower, shave, and dress appropriately I went in shorts and a tank top. Outside of the store were old ladies doing some kind of charity. I go to give a few bucks, and the lady gave me a look like I was going to rob her.

Good for you man. I kind had that feeling about you anyway. How people can ignore those who just need a little helping hand is beyond me.

I just cant drive buy when folks look like they need help, I think I blabbed in some thread about the woman with broken arm and her kid trying to change her own tire in a mall parking garage.. I was furious.. guy after guy just walked past her, not even a second glance, so I re-parked and changed it for her.. maybe 5 or 10 minutes and saved her day, a purely selfish pleasure on my part: how cool is it to so easily and near effortlessly change someones whole day for the better?!?!

... she tried to give me money?!?! LOL... she didn't know what else to do.

I love pushing folks out of the snow too... I am a bit more jaded about that since the time before last, but thats just a thang.

... and your mamma seems to have done a pretty good job... <ahem> except for that whole 'selling dope disguised as nun' thing....

You're the best Dawgmo.. though there are fewer all the time, I'm glad there's still some people that would help.

Good job Bigdawg.

Yeah, people are amazing

Honestly it was not a big deal and was something I have done many times before, whether it was to give help or just to let someone use my phone.

What bugs me is how people can just ignore someone in need of help, especially the elderly. I wonder how the people who just drive by would feel if they had a loved one who needed help and were just ignored or if they themselves needed help?

Good call Y, a few properly adjusted buttons would have tipped the scales faster than you can say, "Good day miss, what seems to be the prob... HEY NOW!"

good to see there are a few good people out there. everyday I lose a little more hope in people,so it really is nice to read things like this

"how cool is it to so easily and near effortlessly change someones whole day for the better?!?!"

Exactly Chef.

On another note, I would LOVE to pull over and help people. I always look to see if MAYBE I can help, but living in New Jersey, it seems people won`t "accept" the help with open arms, and I`m not about to get insulted. Also, with cell phones in everyones possession, I`m sure they`re alright. It sucks to NOT HELP because of the way you might be treated.

I shovel my neighbors car out of the snow sometimes. lol Does that count? They come out and around their car is totally cleaned. I do that when I`m shoveling right next to that space, so what`s a little more work while I`m at it and already sweating. No big deal, but they`re very happy when they see it.

LOL That would suck, you help your neighbor, meanwhile, he`s stealing your garbage cans.
