do kids really need medication?

i was reading this report on a magazine about the amount of kids on meds. its astounding. do they really need meds for some mental disorders? are medications taking place of appropiate punishment? i, for one, do not blame parents that dont spank their kids. it seems as if every little slap is condsidered abuse. but i digress...

I'm a dual major and one of them is phsychology. This is something we address already in college. ADHD is overdiagnosed. Yes the children who actually have it DO need medication, but only about 30% of those prescribed meds actually need it. This disorder is over diagnosed. This is a problem. At the same time children who really do need this, you can beat the ass all day long and it will not help even slightly.

Sending a kid to the counselor who sends the kid to the doctor is a great power trip.

I'll bet some of the teachers who send in a lot of kids have stock in the pharmaceutical manufacturer but I digress.

I'm thinking that its just like how being obsese is a "disease". Some may require it medical attention, but not as many as there are.

no ..its another example of people wanting a magic fix instead of maybe staying together or not cheating ..disciplining the child or substance abuse...and not having the skills or time to do any of these things thanks to american life (easy wrong over a hard right in short.)

Rather than feeding them medication, how about cutting down on their sugar intake and getting them into a sport.

Exactly, some parents are to willing to jump for the quick fix when the answer to these problems are as simple as what they are feeding them or the sedentary life in which they chose to allow thier kids to live.

IMO it really sucks that a parent would be willing to give a child a drug to compensate for a lack of responsibility on their part as a parent. Its to easy to say here take this and calm down rather than grab your sneakers buddy and lets go throw the ball and expend some of that energy ;)
