Do gimmicky exercises like this work?

I downloaded a book from a p2p sharing site about bodybuilding.

In it described the following exercise which would increase arm size.

Grab two dumbells, the weight should be half of what you can do for 10 reps of curls.

Now once you've got the dumbells, Curl for one rep, count ten seconds while holding the dumbells back by your side, then curl for two reps, count for ten seconds, three reps, count, four reps, count, five reps, count, six reps, count, seven reps, count, eight reps, count, nine reps, count, and then finally do ten reps.

Don't get me wrong I bet this exercise is pretty tough, but is it really going to do anything for gains?

I'm always skeptical when I read things like this after reading the stickies on this site... :worried:

I've see decent trainers do some weird looking movements before with weights.
And their clients keep coming back.

Whenever I do a good 4 sets of 21's, I know I feel it the next day about as
much as doing a heavy set of standard 8 rep curls.

Whatever movement puts a heavy load/stress on the muscle works IMO.
Gimmicky sounding or not.
