Do Compulsive Liars Believe What They are Saying?

i worked with one. they lie just to have something to talk about and feel wanted I think.

Some do, absolutely! I know a person who has lied to himself so much that he believes his own lie.

compulsive and pathological lying is a sickness.
I was friends with this girl since I was 5 yrs old and finally walked away from her 2 yrs ago.
Her lies were so sick and pathetic. I would confront her and she actually believed lies I caught her in.
The last lie was when she backed out of going out with me b/c she had "food poisoning". One hr after that call another of my friends saw her in a grocery store.
She went up to my friend and started to cry. Giving her some sob story b/c she knew this friend would come back and tell me.
The next day I called her to ask why she lied, she said she didn't and that she really did have food poisoning.
This was just a small pc of the BS pie she was feeding everyone.
She is also 41 and still lives at home with her parents.

Pathological Liars definately believe themselves, but I think compulsive liars know they are lying, because they usually seem so full of shit.

Fucker had me scammed for a long time, he's smart as hell and cagey plus has a terrific memory. I'd find stuff out, though, and over time it piled up. In the end, that was the biggest reason why the marriage couldn't be salvaged.
I can't stand a liar.
In his case, he knew he was lying, but there was NOTHING that would compel him to admit the truth, even when confronted with evidence. Very frustrating.

the best bullshiters are the ones who believe what they're saying........and there a quite a few.
alot of people in my business are that way. they're amazing sales people but terrible "people". most of them exaggerate everything to get attention or feel important....i usually use the divide by 3 or 4 rule with them once i recognize it to find out the truth.
good liars are typically very smart....stupid people don't make for good liars

1 - You know they are lying
2 - They know that you know they are lying
3 - They still continue to lie
4 - When busted, they try to get out of the lie with yet another lie and...
5 - go back to #1 because you know they are lying...
6 - repeat cycle over and over until your patience runs out and you snap
7 - listen to them blame you for MAKING them tell lies

I dated a dood like that once... I couldn't understand the need for his lies though. I mean, he was a good-looking guy, with a prestigious career and very interesting life but the fucker still felt the need to exaggerate and out and out invent. Took me a few years after I sent him packing to get to the extent of it. Funny thing? Guys like this ALWAYS email/call/chat every several months or so and get "huffy" when you are still questioning them about the last psychotic episode.

That is my bother in law's ex-wife in a nuttshell. We would bust her on her lies and then she would backpedal and lie some more. Then after a period of cooling off, she would come back as if nothing ever happened expecting to be admitted back into the family circle fully validated and acknowledged as if nothing ever happened. Crazy bitch. She is now on her 10th job since the divorce a year ago working at an classy all nude establishment as a bar tender. I wager she will be stripping within 6 months. Her 3 children are paying a heavy price for her refusing accountability of any kind and refusing help knowing full well she has a untreated personality disorder.
