Divx/avi Help---computer People Plz

How can I preview an uncompleted DIVX/AVI that i am downloading from kazaa? I heard just close kazaa, change .dat to .avi and play, but that doesnt work. HELP!

I just tried this to see if it'd work:

double-click on the file, and tell it to open with Windows Media Player. Worked fine for me.
