Hey Texgrl, Im a physician assistant for a large group of orthopaedic surgeons and we see and treat this type of injury on some of our trauma cases. How did your husband injure his ankle? Did he have a fracture / dislocation? There are quite a few factors here that could and will affect his healing. First off, how did they fix it? They either had to use internal fixation, meaning plates and screws, or external fixation, meaning pins coming out through the skin connected together with bars. 13 weeks sounds typical unless he has whats called a pilan Fx. which involves the joint line. As far as the ankle being normal again, I hate to tell you, but with that type of injury it will never be the same. Even if your Dr says it will be. Does your husband smoke? If he does he needs to quit. Smoking drastically slows bone healing. I hope some of this helps, let me know if I can help out anymore, and I hope he gets well soon.
